I don't think it is really possible to define THE most influential person in a time period of 100 years. Each century has numerous periods within itself which produce great, and not-so-great, leaders. For example, in the 20th C, there was WW1, the Depression, WW2, the Civil Rights moemnt, the movement against the Vietnam war in the 60's and 70's, and the lift goes on. Each period produced their own great leaders, such as MLK in the Civil Rights movement. True, the civil rights movement mainly concerned America at the time, but it was somehtingthat the international media had taken hold of.
But of course, some people may have the opinoin that yes, there was a single individual person that was the most influential in the 20th Century.
Although, in my opinion, some of the most influential people are the historical figures like Jesus (putting religious convictions aside) and the such that still dear the most influence on culture today.

Well Muhamed started a religion - so he is on the level of Jesus and Moses and Bhudda -
Saying he is MORE important is just the bias that comes with your religion - Mulsims will say Muhamed is more important - Christians will think Jesus is.
Really I suppose Abraham is more important than any of them as he is the father of all three monothiestic religions.
As for THIS CENTURY - obviously Hitler was VERY influencialin a negative fasion and many of the current political dynamics can be traced back to the War he started.
FDR and Truman who led America through that war - created the UN and made the US a Superpower were also very important - as was Stalin
Ghandhi and MLK were obviously very influencial, as was Pope John Paul the second.
But for me - I think IDEAS will last the longest
- so I think Albert Einstein who redefined how we look at physics and the Universe - and whose theories led to things like Nuclear power -
is ultimately the most influencal person of the century.
His revolution of Science and Mathmatics will be important and significant long after Hitler has faded into the annals of history.
Also People like FORD - who created MASS PRODUCTION - and the Wright Brothers who invented Airplanes - and Bill Gates who created the PERSONAL COMPUTER.
As well as the invention of Television - and the Internet which is obviously very important.

True, bias will come out at any time with a question like this (and is one of the reasons why i mentioned Jesus). But I'm not saying that Muhammed wasn't influential, quite the opposite actually!
But yea, as for the 20th century, I'd have to agree with Luke re: Alebrt Einstein, that is all so true. And yes, the ideas of the 20th century I think will be looked at by history as the more influential things, and not the people. BUt, I could be wrong.

I agree with froot, and I want to add that the most influential person among all ages in all over world is prophet Mohamed (peace be upon him) and that what Dr. Michael H. Hart published in a book called The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History which was the best book in 1978.
I think that we can point to a person every 100 hundred year, a person who influence the daily life of ppl
this effecting doesn't has to be constructive!!
I guess we can point to Hitler as his actions redraw the map of the world.
And Hippies as they entered every house in the world.
And for Muslims countries I can name Hasan Elbanna, as his thoughts are in every Muslim country till now although he died three decades ago!!

The most influential people of the 20th century...
Really, you could argue for a lot of people, as I'm about to do.
1. Ghandi- Just for the first true use of resistance through Pacifisim.
2. Mikael Gorbachev- Because of Perostrika, and Glasnost. Sure when he implemented those, he thought he was supporting Communism, but those policies probably formed the foundation for the end of it. The end of it was what caused the maps to be re-done.
3. Ronald Regan- for weapons spending and Star Wars. The very rumour of it was enough to push Soviet spending to the breaking point.
4. Winston Churchill- for Oration, and his skills in diplomacy. The speeches he gave during W.W. II were enough to rally the troops to beat Hitler.
5. Lester B. Pearson- for Peacekeeping. In 1957, he introduced the idea as a method of solving the Suez dispute.
6. Stephen Lewis- Just for his tireless efforts in fighting AIDS in Africa.
7. George Bush Sr. and Brian Mulroney: for Signing N.A.F.T.A. (North American Free Trade Agreement).
8. Various European leaders for creating the largest (I could mistaken on that)free-trading area in the world in the E.U., as well as attempting to make into a political entity as well.
9. To touch a nerve: David Ben-Gurion, first Prime Minister of Israel. for the creation of the State of Israel.
10. General Dwight D. 'Ike' Eisnhower- for taking over command of the allied forces in W.W. II.
11. General Charles DeGaulle- for two reasons: First for leading the French underground during the war. Second for setting off the fireworks here in this country with three words: 'Vive le Quebec libre!' (Long live Free Quebec), fanned the flames of the Quebec Separation movement.
I could continue...
This list is only the beginning.

I think we need to adjust our pattern of classification a bit. We need to define the most influential people -either positively or negatively- in those terms:
Politics, Science, Economy, Philosophy, Religion, etc...
I agree with what all of you said, but I'd add Anwar As-Sadat, Nelson Mandela, Lech Walensa, Helmut Kohl in politics.
There are also Muhammad 'Abduh, Rashid Rida, Abul-A'la Al-Maududi,Hassan Al-Banna, Sayyid Qutb, and OBL.

Hi all,,
i was really happy to see all of your opinions and that beautiful discussion that you've started between you all...
I think that we had more than on gr8 person in the last century!
Maybe the answer depends on how everyone of us defines the meaning of word (influential) !!!
I really hope to hear from you all again
Best regards,

Nelson Mandela and Gandhi go high up on my list of influential people in this century.
The former because he inspired a whole nation to rise and fight against injustice by being the supreme example of positive resistance.
Gandhi , because he lead the way for peaceful and non-violent resistance and satyagraha. and inspired people around the world. But he had also executed his quota of idiosyncrasies with respect to Indian history.
and simone de'beauvoir, tony morrison, gertrude stein for rewriting her(his)story.

I also agree with alsmot everyone!
But I agree that there is no universal unit of measuring of "the most influential" person.
As Ayman said we need to distinguish in certain areas such as politics, economy, etc.
I will repeat names in politics such as Ghandi, Reagan, Gorbachev, .... plus i would add Tito(Jugoslavia), Gamal Abdul Nasser(Egypt),Yasser Arafat(PA), Ariel Sharon(Israel), Nikita Khrushev(USSR), Jelcin(Russia), Clinton(USA), King Feisal(Saudi Arabia), King Hussein(Jordan), Saddam Hussein(Iraq), Ayatollah Seyyed Ruhollah Khomeini(Iran), and Jawaharlal Nehru(India) in politics.
Nehru, Tito and Nasser are still regarded as founders of NON-ALIGNED states!
In economy i would add John Maynard Keynes(England), Milton Friedman(USA)!
In psychology and neurology Sigmund Freud(Austria)!
In technology Bill Gates(Microsoft), Thomas J. Watson Sr(IBM), Gordon Moore(Intel), Masaru Ibuka(Sony), Byung-Chull Lee(Samsung)!
Well I guess I have to stop otherwise this will get to big !
Cheers,
H.

You guys have made some very legit points but let us not forget dr. Martin Luther King. He was almost single handedly responsible for changing the opions of an entire nation on the fact that, ya know, us blacks might actually be human and deserving of human rights . I understand that he wasnt alone in his battle and that he wasnt the first to chanmge an entire nation but dont ya think that what he did was amazing, also how many other influential people have entire speeches that are basically memorised my everyone?...i have A dream
