Employment in Developing Countries
October 28, 2005 - 05:22 AM
|
|
The economies of many African countries are heavily reliant on foreign remittances, aid and modest resource extraction. Private enterprise is in many cases very poorly developed leading to a dearth of a job prospects. Subsequently, both educated and uneducated youths have an extremely difficult time finding employment.
Do you have any ideas, perhaps from your own experience, on how youths in developing countries can set out on their own to create employment for themselves and others?

You may find some cases of working practices here YSEI do it through knowledge base, mentoring, shiftersnetwork and project funding
http://www.globalknowledge.org/ysei/
"YSEI is a program focused on providing support to young social entrepreneurs to develop innovativesolutions to social problems.
YSEI supports projects by young people who are creating impact to improve the lives of the poor, especially those using information and communication technologies (ICTs) as a critical part of their solution.
Innovation is very important to YSEI. If you have an innovative solution for a social issue, fill out the fellowship application form and social enterprise concept."

I beleive that if there are no jobs for people to find the government has to make jobs. Whether it is building a highway that is not totally neccesary but could be used. Or helping build state buildings or anything of that sort. As Franklin Roosevelt did in the New Deal he created jobs for the unemployed because they could not find their own jobs.
The governments in Africa will probably not be as involved in the idea of unemployment but this is just a suggestion.

youth should not only concentrate on the official job but also focus on the farming activity. why don't youth work on farm with modern technology rather than leaving old people with traditional technology? why don't look for the short rotational cash crop? develop small enterprises based on local resources. so , youth can earn and improve their livelihoods.

Employment is an issue which is multi-faceted. employment in different countries means different things, a source of generating income and supporting oneself and family (as the case may be). In developing countries more often than not labor is availabe and cheap especially in the primary sector (agriculture related). Large sections of the youth work in this sector. Education and personal development opportunities and access is largely unavailable to them. A strategis intervention would be to spread the level of education, awareness and develop skills of a vocational nature among youth. This will propel them towards better employment opportunities. A classic example is the Gramin Bank model, where local village communities living in poverty have risen out of it and their future generations have undertaken occupations like engineering, medicine ect by educating themselves. Pls do go through the Gramin Bank website it offers a lot of innovation and creativity towards tacking poverty and employment locally/indigenousy. I also think that the model can be replicated in developing countries facing similar issues.

I see two of the root of the problems arround Unemployment in developing countries. First, there is no vacancy (job opportunities) and others are no enterpreneur motivation among citizen. Jobs are created either by citizen or government.
But some times, there are many vacancy in the industries, but people are not match to perform the jobs. School did not give fruitfull skill to their student.

The situation in developing countries. though pitiable, has been caused largely by leaders whose responsiblity it is to create an enabling environmemt that will encourage youths in enterprenuerial activities.
Most educational facilities don't relate the theorical aspect of business to the reality on ground and so students graduate only to see a different world than they have been taught in the classroom.

hi guys,
in my opinion the unemployment crisis is many developing countries is multi-faceted and can not be left to governments alone to address however it is important to note that any government has the responsibility to the citizens to create jobs and therefore there should be a comprehensive policy on job creation. this means that governments should seek to attract foreign direct investment and indigineous entrepreneurial efforts in a bid to bolster the private sector which by far has the ability to create more employment than the government can within intself. unfortunately many governments have not focused on the real issues affecting their states but have resorted to crude politics that do go very far in helping the common man.notice that developing economies are characterised by political strife among other ills reflecting the failure of leaders to focus on the nation as a whole.
