Pushcart classroom upgraded...
February 17, 2010 - 07:58 AM

Hello Guys!

I was inspired by a true modern hero named Efren Penaflorida, a Filipino. He was named the "CNN Hero of the Year" for 2009. He was an ordinary man who does extraordinary things. Efren Penaflorida was a teacher and the founder of Dynamic Teen Company(a group of people dedicated to teaching young people and diverting them from joining gangs).

He pioneered the so-called "pushcart classroom", a truly inspiring idea. Through this pushcart classroom he was able to teach children who wasn't fortunate enough to go to school but are willing too. In his cart, there are children books and other basic school supplies that could help the children to learn. And as far as I know, he teaches basic education in the slum areas where most of these unfortunate children are found. He also does this every weekends.

Truly he is a modern day hero. big grin

In this topic, I would like to here your opinions about his , only that it is upgraded this time. From a pushcart why don't we think of a truck big enough to have computers and different ICTs in it. In this way, we would be able to promote technology and teach those children, who are not that knowledgeable enough, to know how to use these kinds of advancements. What do you think about this? What do you think are the long term effects of this kind of service?

Feel free to share your opinion guys! smile

Great topic Kurt Aeron.

Mr. Efren Penaflorida sounds like a real revolutionary. He is a great example to all because he was just an ordinary man who accomplished an extraordinary feat. It shows that we can start from a small position but still have an extended influence.

I think Kurt's idea of a big truck full of technology is a great idea. It is also quite easy to accomplish. I know lots of people in my country would love to take part in something like that. Till now, we've had mobile libraries and service centers but that's about all. However no one in our country has started anything like this and I wonder if it will be started soon. People lack a way to let their voices be known so we should have more public forums where people of similar interest can join together. Great ideas may be produced and the results may be highly effective.

As for the long-term effects - they can only be positive for our development. There are possibly no drawbacks to spreading knowledge on ICT. A mobile truck can be educational and inspire many to spread knowledge even further. People will become more aware and enthusiastic to advance. A want for ICT and education will arise and this is necessary for development to occur in full swing. Information on many subjects can also be spread like this. People could really be affected and touched. I think this is a good way to accomplish the MDGs.
