CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

The distress surrounding child sexual abuse fostered the growth of new subspecialties of concern and intervention: Sexual predators; day care abuses; recovered memory; satanic ritual abuse; and multiple personality disorder all arose, each with its own set of warring experts, advocates, and victims in particular. Yet, of the many fields in which the problem of child sexual abuse took root, child pornography proved the most fertile.

Most people agree that child pornography constitutes sexualized pictures involving children. What is precisely is meant by sexualized can vary depending on whether a legal or the more subjective perspective of the adult with a sexual interest in children is taken. Legal definitions tend to emphasize obscene or sexual content as essential quality of image. Such definitions could vary depending on the legislature with a given country. This has been a problem in relation to the internet where for example cultural, moral and of course legal variations make it difficult to define “pornography” in such a global society.

The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) standing group on offences against minors or children as such defines child pornography as the consequence of the exploitation or sexual abuse perpetrated against children. So therefore it can be defined as any means of depicting or promoting sexual abuse of a child, including print and/or audio, focused or centered on sex acts or the genital organs of the children.

Also in the US although most people believe that child pornography is harmful to the subject children, many others have asked why child pornography should be banned at all. One of the ways that child pornography harms the children is that the materials that capture the child in pornography are permanent and that permanent record increases the harm to the child when it is circulated. Secondly, the continued distribution of such material contributes to the demand of child pornography that requires more children to be exploited. Though there has been much debate over exactly what constitutes child pornography, at the federal level the definition is: any visual depiction involving the use of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct

However while such many definitions are clearly or distinctively important from the law-makers view, they are of limited value in helping us why such images are produced or collected, or the function that they might have in offending behavior. When we emphasize so much on highly sexualized or obscene images turn aside from the fact that any image can be sexualized and fantasized over and importantly what makes that image of the child important is the psychological role it plays in arousal and masturbation. It is true to give legal definitions and what they do is for us to be able to draw boundaries, however it does not help in delineating or describing the problem as it looks like. Indeed whenever legal definitions come in they give rise to the notion of “good” and “bad” offenders, depending on the degree to which the viewer finds the material objectionable.

Collections of child pornography do not arise by accident, but by the deliberate choices an individual makes to acquire material. Nor are the pictures of the same kind. When approaching psychologically to the images, one can identify the range of different pictures that can be discerned are collected by adults with a sexual interest in children, only some of which may be illegal. It is possible to build a fact that there is continuous increased deliberate sexual victimization, varying from everyday and probably accidental involving either no erotic content, or minimal content such as a child in their underwear to pictures showing actual rape and penetration of a child, or other gross acts of obscenity. Such could be helpful in charactering the nature of a given collection, and may also make clear factors that may enable and sustain offender behavior. In acknowledgment to this is that child pornography is not a victimless crime. Regardless of the content of the picture, each time that an image of a child is accessed for a sexual purpose; it victimizes the individual or child involved.

Currently, photographs of children are high. And it seems the age of the children especially females is getting younger, that there is increase in “domestic” production (where the setting are family rooms), and that there has been a growth in the number photographs of Eastern Europe children. Over the last year, there has been also been an increase in the number of pictures whose origins appear to be commercial web sites; based in south America or eastern Europe. These and the emergence of more explicit
Child pornography from Eastern Europe access to which involves payment, seem to represent a growth in commercial exploitation of the market for child pornography.

TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES AND THE INTERNET

Through the recent technological advances, computers or computer equipment is used to record or transport child pornography. This can be done through the use of digital cameras, flatbed scanners, video capture cards, which all can be used to convert photograph, film, or videotape to digital image file format. The most common type of digital formats used to transport photographs are .gif, .jpg (.jpeg), and .zip.

It is important to stress that technological changes are evident in the emergence of material distributed through the Internet, but Video still seems to remain the principal primary production medium for child pornography. This is reflected in new recent Internet material in the amount of high quality video captures. The internet is fast becoming base for viewing of child pornography due to the easy accessibility of these obscene pictures.

The new technologies also mean that “users” of the Internet can quickly become “producers.” Such photographs do not need to be commercially processed which allows for a much greater level of security in their production. Images can also be altered by the pedophile to suit personal preferences, or can even be made up of components from separate photographs. Such images are often called “pseudo photographs.” Indeed, technology is now allowing the creation of lifelike child pornography without the use of
Children at all. The Internet also allows for on-line abuse of children. A major source for both text and images are the usernet newsgroups. There are such groups on the internet covering a wide range of subjects the vast majority are innocent and appropriate but child abusers use some of these newsgroups to communicate with each other, to ask advice about computer related problems or the availability of new software. They also use them to request pictures from other abusers and to post them. Strangely enough the pictures act as a form of currency, making the activity legitimate or lawful and creating a social togetherness.

Bulletin Board Systems (bbs) are similar to Newsgroups but with more real time involvement. Web based bbss have played an increasingly important role in the on-line child pornography makers’ community in recent years. I consider them as high tech party lines, by which users can send and receive text, engage in conversations, and both upload and download files. A more familiar means of communication is through e-mail and the mass distribution of e-mail files through List Servers (Listservs).

A further important source of both information and material is Internet Relay Chat (irc). This is a vast multi-user discussion forum, which allows users to communicate through text but in real time. They can exchange files directly with one another using a direct Client-to-Client (dcc) feature and can distribute images through Fserves. This allows the user to access a certain part of another user’s hard drive to upload and download files. These child abusers can therefore be invited to ‘visit’ somebody else’s collection and take what material they want.

The World Wide Web (www) is another source of child pornography. It is now relatively easy to create Web pages and features built into Web browsers enable users to capture content created by other people with a minimum of effort. The proliferation of free web servers has meant that individuals can upload a web site containing child pornography anonymously, and with ease. It is unknown how many people look at child pornography on the Internet, nor is it always clear what motivates them to do so. Out of the many thousands of people who simply look, there are a much smaller number who are involved in the distribution or production of material, or both.

The appeals of the Internet for those with a sexual interest in children are many. Social connections can vastly increase, and such virtual communities, while providing a safe haven, also allow for the control of social distance and intimacy. The Internet allows the user to achieve a sense of mastery on-line, and status and prestige are achieved by those with good computer skills. Such skills and the ability to master the virtual environment provide a sense of power. Users gain social confidence while on-line and report that they find it easier to make friends, using the metaphor of the Internet as the Prozac of social communication. There is also the suggestion of altered states of consciousness through Internet use, facilitating levels of engagement that would otherwise be seen as aversive or inappropriate.

WHY CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IS HARMFUL

The following selection is from the book and sums up exactly what harm can result from child pornography: Child Sexual Abuse: A Handbook for Health Care and Legal Professionals, Diane Schetky, M.D., and Arthur Green, M.D., Brunner/Mazel, Inc., 1988, pp. 154-157.

Although illegal, child pornography constitutes about 7% of the pornography market. Studies indicate that there are at least 264 different magazines being sold each month that deal with sexual acts between adults and children. Some such as "Coming with Daddy", "Lust for Children", "How to Deflower Your Daughter", and "School Girls" are primers in child sexual abuse. Child pornography may also be used to lure children into sexual activity and instruct them, since young children who view such material may be led to believe that this is acceptable behavior. In addition to decreasing inhibitions, this material may cause sexual arousal in some children.

Others believe that child pornography is central to pedophiliac psychology, social orientation, and behavior. Lanning, an expert in the field, observes that pedophiles almost always collect child pornography or child erotica. Further, he notes "the only way you can produce child pornography is to molest a child" and that "child pornography exists primarily for the consumption of pedophiles. If there were no pedophiles there would be no child pornography" (p. 50). Some pedophiles develop elaborate videotape systems and even computerize their collections and sex acts and exchange data with other pedophiles. T he trading of pornography with other pedophiles may lead to exchanging victims for their sexual services. Pedophiles also keep records and souvenirs of their victims which, as noted by Lanning (1986), can be very incriminating in investigations. For example, in a recent investigation of child pornography and molestation in the Chicago public schools, a search of a teacher's home turned up 200 photos of nude boys, an international mailing list, fliers advertising young boys in an escort service, and copies of a pornographic magazine believed to have been published by the accused. Further raids of homes of those on the customer list revealed several crates of videotapes, photographs, and magazines related to child pornography (New York Times, March 25, 1986).

Pornography may also be used as blackmail against children to ensure their continued participation in the sexual activity and the secrecy that surrounds it. While pedophiles use child pornography primarily to satisfy their own needs, others capitalize o n their appetite for it and, although not necessarily consumers themselves, may make considerable profit through the sale of child pornography. Some pornographers may even use their own children, pay parents for the use of their children, or pay needy runaways to pose.

Children involved in child pornography are often seduced by the abuser's caring and father like attitude toward them. The pedophile
is adept at choosing children who are particularly needy and in turn relates well to them. Gifts and special favors are common early in the relationship. He may operate on a one-to-one relationship with the victim or be simultaneously involved with a number of children who are aware of each other's sexual activities in what is known as a sex ring. Studies indicate that t he offender's presence in the lives of children involved in sex rings usually appears legitimate as he often occupies a position of authority and is familiar to the children involved. Initiation into sexual activities usually progresses from observing to exhibiting to direct physical sexual activity. The leader of the ring controls and manipulates the child through peer pressure, competition, and threats, as well as rewards. Children who become involved in sex rings are most likely to be male, and the pedophile may encourage them to turn on one another and take vicarious pleasure in their sadism. Because the child has come to trust the pedophile and care about him, the child is understandably ambivalent about the relationship. His embarrassment over his participation, as well as bonding to the pedophile, makes it difficult for him to reveal the secret. the pedophile may operate solo or as part of a more organized, syndicated s ex ring in which children are recruited, pornography produced, and sexual services delivered to a wide network of customers.

HOW CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SHOULD BE CURBED

There are many different ways in which child pornography on the internet could be curbed. Although many say that the answer is to simply not look at it that does not solve the overriding problem of the children that are getting hurt. If those who sell child pornography are arrested and prosecuted and the demand/availability is cut off the number of children who are harmed would be reduced. The following are several ways which anyone who comes into contact with can do to help curtail child pornography. The first and perhaps most effective way to stop child pornography is to contact local law enforcement officials or a local District Attorney's office. If you come across child pornography or in some way learn the location on the internet of child pornography, write down the address or other location and simply contact your local law enforcement officials. They will be able to either take action or contact another agency which will know how to take action. Further, informing local law enforcement will force those agencies that have not already done so to learn more about crime on the internet and how to combat it.

Contacting online service providers is another way to curb child pornography. Any of the larger service providers such as Mindspring, America Online, CompuServe, and Prodigy can be contacted. Once one of these providers has been contacted the next step is to ask them to remove any newsgroups or sites that contain and child pornography.

Another way that people can assist in fighting child pornography is to contact local politicians. E-mailing local officials, sending them files on disk or locations of child pornography and the like is sure to get attention. In addition asking those local officials for more stringent laws against child pornography is sure to be effective. Because it deals with child welfare all officials will be eager to show they they helped benefit children this type of action is sure to get attention. Further, asking local officials to also increase the liability of Internet Service Provider's (ISP's), a subject to vast to discuss here, will also assist to control child pornography.

Contacting local media is another option that is sure to get attention. Alerting local media to the problem and availability of child pornography and how local Internet Service Providers (ISP's) have such material available. Since cyber-pornography is talked about nationally so often, local news media will likely be very interested in making it a local story.

Another option to stop child pornography on the internet is to contact businesses on the internet which advertise. Asking them to contact the ISP's that they advertise on and telling them that if child pornography is found on their ISP's that they will n o longer advertise there. Making ISP's feel the pressure of keeping child pornography off the internet in their pocketbooks is sure to promote action.

In addition, there are many other potential solutions that can be utilized to stop child pornography including victim assistance programs, anonymous reporting facilities, and inter-agent task forces.

CONCLUSION
There are mixed emotional responses in the public. Despite the fact that child pornography is illegal and there is strong public sentiment to prosecute violators, it still flourishes in secret rings that protect it from disapproving eyes.

The Internet is now a convenient method for communication and exchange of photographs of a pornographic nature which increases the ease in which these child abusers indulge their prurient interests. On the Internet there are at least three newsgroups devoted to the discussion of child pornography. Usually the discussions are for the legalization of it and the abolishment of age of consent laws. You can also find photographs of nude boys and girls on sites devoted to "family nudism" and such.

The demand for this material seems to be strong despite the illegality of it (most states outlaw the mere possession of child pornography). Some enterprising Internet entrepreneurs take advantage of this demand and try to use child pornography as a hook to get people to visit their website.

Child Pornography is harmful. It is harmful for the subjects of child pornography and it is harmful for all other children who could become victims by those who are fooled by online child pornography.

Since the introduction and the huge explosion of the internet the number of child pornography cases has increased. The internet provides several advantages to those who try to obtain it. The Internet allows the ability to locate and obtain greater numbers of potential sources, in both domestic and foreign countries. Further, the Internet allows access to a greater number of potential trading partners and customers, the anonymity (at least in theory) of the user, and the convenience and speed to get the material. In addition, it offers easy storage of child pornography and flexibility in storage locations of the contraband. Because of these factors the availability and use of child pornography has increased. Federal, state and local governments have realized this increase, however, and are taking steps to prosecute more cases. The bottom line is that child pornography is illegal, penalties are stiff, and it is politically correct to take a stance against it. Because of this, prosecutions are on the increase and because of the huge social stigma attached most people who are accused simply plead guilty and the issue is not brought to trial. Reportedly the government even has sting sites on the internet and in newsgroups which track a user's IP address and can be used in prosecutions. However, as prosecutions increase so do technological advances which make interception and decoding more and more difficult, which promises to make child pornography an issue that will be prevalent for many years to come.

Stop!!! mainstreaming Child Sexual Abuse and Pedophilia
August 13, 2003 - 02:55 AM

Though child, sexual abuse, child pornography and pedophilia ar considered the worst form of crime, there are renowned psychiatrists and psychologists that is promoting this crimes as normal variants of human sexuality.

We the youth and the children has more to suffer, therefore its high time for us to work together and fight the people who attack the moral fibers of our society in the name of science.

Below is an article by Christopher Chow of the www.academia.org. I posted this article on women's rights yahoo groups in our country where our youth organization is involved. And it is sad to note that they deny the article and post their own version which shows a distorted at the same time affirmative view of the Author's pervert ideology.

Post your comments and be one of us in our fight against perversion.

------------------------------------------------------------
The University of Minnesota Press's publication of Judith Levine's book, Harmful to Minors: The Perils of Protecting Children From Sex, has stirred nationwide controversy because of the book's encouragement of pedophilia.

"Where's your nose? There's your nose! Where's your clitoris? There's your clitoris," writes feminist Judith Levine. "Children need adult affirmation of the emotions and sensations we would call sexual excitement. They need names for pleasurable touching that do not convey shame and that communicate positive feelings about the sensations those touches elicit."

Harmful to Minors' overall theory is that parents should teach their children how to masturbate and have sex with other children. Children how young? Levine says "all ages," including infants. She cites Dr. Alfred Kinsey's discredited claim that infants masturbate and can be brought to "orgasm" by adults multiple times a day.

Levine goes into great detail describing how a preschool, the Children's Liberation Day Care Center in New York, instructs their "four and five year-olds" to masturbate and perform "child-on-child touch." According to her, "Very few parents objected to any of these practices in years of teaching." Levine claims that, "Three-quarters of kids had engaged in masturbation or some kind of sex with other kids before the age of six." She cites no source for this statement.

Levine opposes laws banning child pornography and voluntary installation of Internet anti-pornography filters for home computers, because according to Levine, chocolate is more dangerous to children than sex. "A wide range of sexual behavior is normative in children. In spite of a paucity of empirical data, we know that masturbation is ubiquitous from early on, more noticeably among little boys than little girls. So is 'playing doctor,' inserting fingers into orifices, and other such pastimes. In the so-called latency years, from about seven to eleven, children continue to masturbate, touch each other, and have crushes on their classmates and friends."

The author assures readers that pedophiles, unwed pregnancy, and venereal diseases are the "myths" and "fictions" of "Right-wing propaganda." "It's as if they [parents] cannot imagine that their kids seek sex for the same reasons they do: They like or love the person they are having it with. It gives them a sense of beauty, worthiness, happiness, or power. And it feels good."

"Pedophiles are not generally violent," writes Levine, "If there is such a thing as a pedophile at all…. More important, sexual contact with a child does not a pedophile make." She accuses America's Most Wanted host John Walsh of creating a "panic" after his six year-old son Adam was abducted and decapitated. She refers to Adam's murder as a "liaison." According to Levine, when adults rape and murder children it is the fault of the government for making pedophilia illegal. "[Pedophiles], if left alone, might do nothing more harmful to minors than sit around and masturbate to pictures of ten-year-olds in bathing suits."

Critics contend that children of "any age" could not possibly consent to sexual intercourse, and it is therefore abuse. Levine refutes this argument by writing, "Just like the word abuse, the word consent is subject to multiple meanings. Negotiation is part of children's sex play. It may involve bribes and trickery, conflict, trade-offs, and power imbalances, like all other interactions between children."

Unwed pregnancy is also a creature of "Right-wing propaganda" to stop children from having sex, claims Levine, since abortion is legal. She professes that groups favoring government funded abortions, like Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL), do not go far enough because they claim to oppose abortion itself and support only the legality of abortion. Levine concludes that these groups should be supporting the act of abortion itself.

Levine refuses to refer to abortion opponents as pro-life or anti-abortion. Instead, she calls them "antichoice." She labels pregnancy and childbirth, "the biological handicap of the female sex."

Hollywood and the entertainment industry are also staunchly "antichoice," according to Levine, because they sometimes show pregnant female characters upset about being pregnant, or show women who have had abortions regretting their actions. Levine refers to depictions of abortion as negative and not positive as, "Right-wing propaganda." She dismisses any claim that women suffer any ill effects from abortion, once again as, "Right-wing propaganda." The morality of abortion is never discussed.

Parts of the book are also devoted to Levine's condemnation of capitalism, school vouchers, George W. Bush and other issues unrelated to the book's subject.

AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are classified as the same "right-wing propaganda" by Levine. She preaches that promiscuity is "safer" than marriage because unmarried people use prophylactics while married couples do not. Hence, married couples are the greatest "risk-group" for AIDS. Marriage is "a risky practice." "Family values will not make the world safe for children and surely not sexually safe," she writes.

Questionable statements in Harmful to Minors about pedophiles being harmless, infants masturbating, and STDs being "myths," has lead to nationwide attention and criticisms of the University of Minnesota Press for publishing the pro-pedophilia book. Minnesota House Majority Leader Tim Pawlenty expressed outrage over the publicly funded institution endorsing pedophilia. "This kind of disgusting victimization of children is intolerable, and the state should have no part in it."

The University of Minnesota Press has defended its decision. "It's being presented as a book about pedophilia, and it doesn't advocate pedophilia, and it isn't about that," announced Press Director Douglas Armato. "There are four pages in the book that talk about intergenerational sex." This account is untrue. Campus Report found fifteen pages on pedophilia in the introduction alone, and numerous others throughout the book.

"We just hope that if people keep an open mind and don't turn away from the idea of the book that they'll see it is a breadth of carefully researched documents and scholarly evaluation," professed Marketing Director Kathryn Grimes. Yet many of the book's sources are from self-serving pro-pedophilia essays, some from the North American Man/Boy Love Association's NAMBLA Bulletin. Few scientific studies are cited. No source is given for Levine's allegation that 75% of American children have sex before the age of six.

Grimes said, "We've received a lot of phone calls, e-mail, and mail from people expressing concern about the book."

All of this negative publicity has forced the University of Minnesota Press to take action. Vice president of research Christine Maziar said the University has appointed a committee of five experts to review the criteria by which the Press chooses to publish a book.

Harmful to Minors has also caused controversy because of its forward by former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders. Elders served as surgeon general under President Bill Clinton until he asked her to resign in 1994 after she proposed adding masturbation to the curriculum of public schools.

Judith Levine is a feminist who has written for the publications Ms and My Generation. She is also the author of My Enemy, My Love: Women, Men, and the Dilemmas of Gender.

"I don't endorse sex between anyone, actually," stated Levine on the Fox News channel. Harmful to Minors' conclusion seems to contradict this. "Sex is not harmful to children. It is a vehicle to self-knowledge, love, healing, creativity, adventure, and intense feelings of aliveness. There are many ways even the smallest children can partake of it. Our moral obligation to the next generation is to make a world in which every child can partake safely, a world in which the needs and desires of every child-for accomplishment, connection, meaning, and pleasure-can be marvelously fulfilled."

I don't agree that she had a quote: 'Pervert Idealogy'

I suggest reading this interview and reading the book before you go ahead and judge her research, and her beliefs...

http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/2002/04/19/levine_talks/index.html

It's sad, but not surprising, that fear (of sex) still prevails in the most sensitive of issues.

The world is divided into two forces--the Good and the Evil. Those in the middle are what Christ said in the Book of Revelation:

"Youre neither hot nor cold...and I will spit you out of my mouth!"

So what is our position???

Its either accept what is good or what is evil. We should decide, and our organization always have its own definite position.

Judith Levine is playing safe, but what is the bottomline of everything? no matter how he touch emotions and make appear that her ideology is wholesome, the day will come that all secrets will be laid bare.

She even qoute Dr. Alfred Kinsey, a sex researcher who condoned sexual experiments with children as young as 2 months old and his research was uncovered 50 years later to be fraudaulent.

Her research for me is perversion in !!! she attacks the moral fibers of the society, people who approves her works are perverts. Pedophiles, man/boy love associations, inscestous parents, and everything sour.

We should not defy logic--in two oppossing views, one should fall and the other should rise and if we are in the middle or making both rise or fall, I think thats corruption.

I feel you are a radical liberal person, because I meet agencies here who promotes her books and all of them are liberals.

I will never for get these words: "Children are sexual beings and they are free to choose whoever they want to choose, denying children of sexual intercourse is a form of sexual abuse and blah blah blah blah blah" Go to hell!!!! and leave children alone!!!!!!

Salon.com's view is on the other extreme side, I guess, otherwise there will be no controversy.

Levine is sick!!!!
Visit her website and you will learn how sick she is...
If you think her ideology is sound enough to make a society survive, I believe both of you have the same feathers...
She is a pedophile advocate. Pedophiles who are PREDetors who ATTACK the innocence of children

Child pornography is a serious issue in the world today. I am unable to understand how anyone can take any pleasure out of porn featuring children. Its bad enough children aren't safe from sexual predators, but to promote child pornography by some researchers is shocking beyond belief. I worry about the future of little children the world over.
