starting out!
November 19, 2002 - 12:13 PM

I am trying to get started on a new company. I would like to start my own line of clothing, specifically snowboard type clothing. I would like to know where the best place is to start, and what are some resources I could use to help me along the way? I plan on starting out making simple things such as; hoodies, sweaters, long sleeve shirts, t-shirts, and maybe hats. I also want to then make snowboarding/skiing jackets, and some day move on to gloves, boots, bindings, boards, etc.

So if you could please help me out!

Thanks, Sincerely Chris!

I think that is awesome, that you want to start your own ski/snowboarding clothing store. My suggestion would be the following:
First, decide if you want to market your product (in this case, articles of clothing) through an already established retailer, or if you would like to be the retailer yourself. Given that you are in Canada, there are several retailers that could help you out with that (I will mention them in the next point). The choice you make in this area would affect your start up costs and your responsibilities as the creator of the line.
Second, try and contact several local retailers. West 49 is probably one of the best sources for this, given that it is run by a relatively 'young' and snowboarding group of people. This could mean doing anything from getting a job with the retailer to get an idea of the market, or writing a letter with your ideas(logo, why you think your product would sell, etc.).
Third, don't lose sight of what you are doing. The fact is, too many designers are going mainstream to market their product to a large audience. Draw out a few of your ideas and start creating a portfolio of your work. If you have the resources, create a shirt or other article of clothing using transfer-on logos, etc. Just have fun!

those are just a few of my ideas. I don't know if that helps, but I think that would be an awesome place to start.
Good luck!

Thanks alot for the info. I almost forgot about this post i posted it so long ago. That really helped i already have about 10 logos, and i might have found someone to manufacture them for me, in smaller numbers that i can afford at the moment. I also have some ideas for retailing, and advertising. I will do the portfolio idea aswell, as of right now i have my ideas written down in a binder and organized. If you have any other suggestions go ahead and tell me.
Thanks again, Chris.
