100 person world.
September 18, 2005 - 01:07 AM
|
|
If Earth's population was shrunk into a village of just 100 people, with all the human ratios existing in the world still remaining, what would this tiny, diverse village look like?
That's exactly what Phillip M. Harter, a medical doctor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, attempted to figure out. This is what he found:
57 would be Asian.
21 would be European.
14 would be from the Western Hemisphere.
8 would be African.
52 would be female.
48 would be male.
70 would be nonwhite.
30 would be white.
70 would be non-Christian.
30 would be Christian.
89 would be heterosexual.
11 would be homosexual.
6 people would possess 59 percent of the entire world's wealth, and all 6 would be from the United States.
80 would live in substandard housing.
70 would be unable to read.
50 would suffer from malnutrition.
1 would be near death.
1 would be pregnant.
1 would have a college education.
1 would own a computer.
The following is an anonymous interpretation:
Think of it this way. If you live in a good home, have plenty to eat and can read, you are a member of a very select group. And if you have a good house, food, can read, and have a computer, you are among the very elite.
If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more fortunate than the million who will not survive this week. If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.
If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death, you are fortunate, more than three billion people in the world can't.
If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead, and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of this world.
If you have money in the Bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.
If your parents are still alive and still married, you are very rare, even in the United States.
If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful, you are truly blessed because the majority can, but most do not.
If you can hold someone's hand, hug them or even touch them on the shoulder, you are blessed because you can offer a healing touch.
If you can read this message, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.

We've got a lot to be grateful for - those of us who are healthy enough, learned enough, resourced enough to read this message - so much to be grateful for and so much left still to do!!!

My gosh. That's an eye opener when you put it like that.
"If you can read this message, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all."
Hmnmm, and I was actually thinking that that quote there could mean another thing...if you can read this message, you are more blessed than over {insert how many here} people in the world that won't even set eyes on this thread let alone be able to read this message.
At least for those of us here we're able to have the chance to open our eyes like this. Know a different perspective as well.
I'm starting to believe we're more blessed than we can possibly know.

Thats a very nice post. People should be grateful for what they have or even dont have.
Those of us who are fortunate should help the unfortunate if u wanna make a difference in this world & make it a better place.

After watching the video it made me realize there is so much to be thankful for. The statistics were eye opening and I could only imagine what the world would be like with just a 100 people. Its kind of scary knowing that one day it could just be us against the world.

After watching this video it made me realize that this world would be horrible if the population was 100 people.
18 people would be muslim
14 people would be jewish
33 people would be christians
43 people live without sanitation
14 people cant read
3 people have internet access
18 people struggle to live on $1.00 a day
53 people struggle to live o $2.00 a day
50 people would be men
50 people would be women
1 adult from age 19-49 would have A.I.D.S

The main lesson for this video about if the world consisted of 100 people was that you should appreciate what you have. Most of the people that are on this site have an education, can read, have a computer with internet access, and have a roof over our heads while the majority of our world are sick, malnourished, and homeless. We all take things for granted and we all know that. Next time we all are upset that we don't have the newest version of an iPod touch or we don't get the brand name bag, just remember that there are people out there that can't even afford to feed themselves or their family, let alone think of getting a new pocketbook.

@OP
This quote is very shocking. It is very shocking because it shows how the world progress over the decades. It is important that we know this because so we as a community can help the 3rd world countries. It is very sad that half of the world can not read. Another reason why it is sad is because 18 people have to struggle making 1 U.S.D. We as a community or a village are getting closer together because of technology. So this means that we can help better. This is why it is more shocking.
