[Poll] Media: Makes or Breaks
September 14, 2005 - 04:36 AM

They say that media has the ultimate power over a politician. It can either make his political career or ruin it. How true. The world is awash in visual and auditory stimuli: television, films, radio, books, newspapers, magazines, and advertisements clamor for attention, and we give them a great deal of our time.

Today, I would like to introduce us to another profound truth. The media can either make our lives better or ruin our them. The sort of things that we hear and see in our day to day routines have a direct connection to the kind of people that we turn out to be, at the end of the day.

There was a time when we thought that what we see and what hear does not really affect us. We thought that we have the ability to only take in what we deem important and leave out the part that is rubbish. Well, now it has been proven to be a lie. What you take in, definately cames out. Can you imagine, we are a product of what we take out of the media. What we see and hear makes us!
To me, this realisation is awesome. That thought lasts only for a minute though.
I start thinking to myself. What have I been watching of late? What kind of music do I listen to? What kind of conversations do I engage in?
Think of all the violent programmes that are normally aired on teli. Think of the ponography and all thatkind of unhealthy stuff that we normally see. Think of a ten year old watching this kinds of things! It is sickening!
Media can be good or bad. We have seen some entertaining stuff, educating and informative from teli.I was looking at last month's ( August 2005) edition of the 'True love East Africa' margazine. There is an article about advertisements. The writer was saying how these days, advertisements with pictires about sex are slowly loosing appeal(for lack of a better word). This is good because now people realise that this is affecting them and their children, and they are saying no to this.

The thing is, we have to choose what we want to become of us. If we want to make a positive change in the society, we have to undergo a direct total transformation ourselves. We have to be the change we want to see take place in our society. We have to decide how we, want to change. The fact still remains-we are a direct product, of what we see and hear.
Take care!
