[Poll] Committment to MDGs
September 13, 2005 - 09:42 AM

A lot of talk has been done on this subject. I would like to say that the only way in which countries can fulfil their committment to the UN on the MDGs is if they put aside their usual activities and start to prioritise the MDGs.
In Kenya for example, Millions if not billions of shillings are being spent on campaigns here and there. If it is not the constitution it is the travel expenses of the Members of Parliament or their lobgbying for certain bills in Parliament.
YEsterday (12 Sept. 2005) a man traveled all the way from Bumala to Nairobi, by bicycle just to come and tell the Minister for Security and his area Member of Parliament that the chief is playing dirty. Can you imagine, this guy spent two to three weeks on the road, cold and hungry, to come and meet the guy he elected to represent him.
This is a case of extreem poverty. Chances that this guy can not buy text books for his children in primary school, even though basic education is free, are qite high. Probability that he can not pay fees for his children in High School are even higher! He is just an example.
Our leaders should put more committment into fulfilling their Pledge. This will only happen if they are willing to do this.
IS it possible for nations to fulfil the MDGs without the help of their govenments? I ask this because at the rate in which things are going, we might end up blaming our govenments for things that we could have done for ourselves, come 2015.
Thank you.

I don't think we could reach the MDG's goals without the governments' help. This is a democratic society right? If more and more people demand the government to prioritize the MDGs, I think it would give them more pressure. I think that we need everybody to rally together to make these goals become real. If we could somehow pressure the government so much, do you think we could make these goals a priorty for them? I don't think enough people know about MDGs...I didn't know about them before I joined this site. I had never heard of them...nobody talked about it in my school. We need to make these goals more public so that we can band together and convince the government.
