Global Patriotism ?
September 10, 2005 - 02:09 AM

GLOBAL PATRIOTISM?

I've come across this opportunity. A film crew is looking for an idea of a patriotic documentary. As I usually do, I got involved, I suggested a couple of ideas; myself and the crew settled to meet next week and look into the matter.

I had this time to reflect and I really put a couple of questions to myself:

- what does it mean to be a patriot?

- what if patriotism intervenes with individual rights?

- is it worth to multiply images of patriotism via media and indoctrinate youths into dogmas of nationhood?

- and ALL IN ALL IS THERE A NEW GLOBAL PATRIOTISM?
HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE A GLOBAL PATRIOT IN A NATION STATE?

Olexi,

it's a crucial theme of a film...I really appreciate that kind of films.

We have to notice that sometimes nationalism is rightful when a nation is seeking recognition upon being dominated by another nation...and -dialectically speaking- some othr times, nationalism adopted by the dominant nation is not that rightful.

I think the dialectical quarrel would be one of a good film...

i thought that patriotism was not so much "im from country 'A' and its the best" but more "im not from country 'B' so i will stick up for my country"

so my way of thinking is how can you have a global patriot if there is no other globe to become a patriot against?

i hope that i makes sense. :S

When I said that I'm not proud of belonging to my country, that doesn't mean I don't love it. I love it by nature, likr the way I love my mother...and if my mother may not be the best mother, the same goes to my country, I love them both as they are !

Though, that does not maean in any sense that I feel having some kind of privilege over ppl living in other countries, or that we -Egyptians- are a superior ppl...that sounds something so sick for me to be proud of...

Personally, my pride is to the ideology I've chosen to belong to, which has basically not only unified Arabs, Turks, Berbers, Persians, Kurds, Asians, Africans, and Slavs under the brotherhood of Islam, but also has enveloped other ideologies with human brotherhood (ppl have one origin: Adam and Eve), tolerance and protection.

I think that the biggest drawback of modern nationalism is the division between the same people, which colonialism has created in many of the third world countries. Take the Arab region as an example: the whole sets of borders between the current Arab nations were drawn in 1916 in the Sikes-Picot agreement; before that date there was nothing called Syria, Lebanon, or Jordan...it was just the way in which UK and France distributed their gains from the Ottoman Empire in WWI.

i love my country ,may it's not the best and powerful country in the world ,it may not give me what i think that i want ,may be i don't like something here ,but it will always be that connection to the land ,to the people and to my memories.it will always be that love i have in my heart, that bad feelings i got when i'm travelling away from home ,that attitude i have when i see something wrong and try to make it right and make me defend my country by my soul, but it doesn't mean that i will always be against other countries because we all humans living on one planet ,on one land ,seeking peace and love for all .
to be honest it's not up to us because may be there is someone from USA but may be he is not supporting the war but he 's still american ,actually it's up to the other people judging your behaviour according to your country.

psychoanna - remember that when people say they hate America - a great many of them still want to come and live here.

That is one of the ironies.

aymanelhakea & dodidove - I think you both hit the nail on the head.

I agree that Colonialism has created division in the third world. Although ayman, the middle-east is still very tribal, I do not know that I beleive it would be a single unified Islam were it not for a few of the boarder divisions the French and English laid down between the World Wars.

And I agree with both of you that love of country does not have to mean you think you are "better" or "always right" - any more then belonging to Christianity means you are "better" then Jews or Muslims - or that being Jewish or being Mulsim makes you "better"

If that is your reason for belonging to a religion or a nation - to be "superior" then you are a shallow minded baffoon.

The reason I love my country is that my family and friends are here, and that I am allowed to do what I want, pursue my own goals, marry my own love, go and say what and where I please.

And New York - where I grew up - is a heck of a town.

That is what I love about my country.

what's your own definition of patriotism?
September 11, 2005 - 05:01 AM

So it appears that some sort of pressure on the nation-state is the reason to be a patriot. Then, what about national cultures?

Thanks for good points Matt85 and Aymanelhakea

Imagine a person living in a country 'B', being a rightful citizen of that country and etc. etc. while belonging to or exploring a foreign culture (of a country 'A').

Are there any grounds on which citizens of different nations can share some sort of universal morality, so that they'd be able to prevent conflicts.

Are you proud of your country? Tell me why?

A film crew is looking for an idea of a patriotic documentary for the upcoming patritic film fest in Ukraine.

I would like to know what's your idea of patriotism.

What makes you proud of your nation?

"remember that when people say they hate America - a great many of them still want to come and live here."

i think that is very debatable.

maybe america has a lot to be thanked for? people in other countries join together because they are "Not-American" or even "anti-american". so they become patriots too.

Well, I'm not proud of my country; I don't like to be patriotic to a piece of land, or to an ethnic group. Socrates said : "My country is the world"...and he was proud of his own philosophy.

Pride is really that of ideas that molten down barriers between people, and tolerates "others"...that's why I think that stupid passports and barriers have done a great damage to this world.

I love my country too, but why does everyone else I know hate my country? Come on people please, NOT EVERY AMERICAN IS A COLD BLOODED KILLER. Stop hating me and my country! I find it hard to be patriotic when everyone else is on my back about how much the States and it's people suck. USA DOES NOT SUCK. Just 'cause Mr. Bush started a war and killed tons of innocent people it doesn't mean that every other American is a cold blooded killer. Why does everyone I know hate USA? But if you hate me and my country, that's okay 'cause at least I'm patriotic and I'm actually proud of my country no matter what unlike those people I know that are always on my back. At heart we are all good people - trust me on that one.

I love my country!

But this same country and its culture has taught me to be a global citizen.

There is a thousands of years old saying, in our ancient language that goes: 'Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam' meaning 'earth is one family'. There are various such sayings and poems that say the same thing. That is why I love my country and and I am proud of her.

Still I find no contradiction between being patriotic and being a global citizen. I need not hate my own country and my own people to respect and love the cultures and beliefs of other people. I would be the best friend of my neighbor till they don't attack my country. Once they attack, they would not have an enemy more dangerous than me.

To summarise: "I can love my neighbors culture but I can't love his military".

Luke,

I think I've indicated the reasons for which I've chosen to belong to Islam in my last post. I believe that only God has that right to decide who is better than whom, and not us...

this is an interesting discussion , Olexi that's a nice idea you are working on but it's going to need alot of time and effort ,for me to be a patriot is to feel that you belong to a place or a nation and to love it in an unordinary way and try to give it and improve it in every way you can ( but ofcourse in a right way) but loving your country doesn't mean that you love it in a blind way in a way you feel everything done by your country is right because it's your country ,Olexi to answer one of your questions i think if we remembered that all of us are humans and as ayman said we are the children of Adam and Eve and if we treated eachother in a way you agree to be treated with and respected others even if they have different believes or thoughts then we won't have alot of conflicts but unfortuanetly it's all IF IF
