all about familial mediterranean fever (fmf)
September 17, 2005 - 06:02 AM

Definition
familial mediterranean fever is an inherited disorder that is characterized by recurrent fever and inflammation, often involving the abdomen or the lung.

Alternative names
familial proxysmal polserositis; periodic peritonitis ;periodic disease ; periodic fever.

Causes,incidences,and risk factors
the cause of the disease is unknown .it usually affects people of mediterranean ancestry esoecially non-ashkenaze(sephardic) jews.armenians and arabs.it can be seen in other patients as well.

Symptoms usually begin between 5and 15 years old.inflammation in the lining of the abdominal cavity ,chest cavity ,skin,or joints occurs along with high fever that usually peak in 12 to 24 hours.attacks may very in severity of symptoms , and people are usually symptom free between attacks .

The incidence is very rare, and risk factors for the disease include a family history of the familial mediterranean ancestry.

Prevention
there is no known way to prevent this disorder.

Symptoms
* fever or alternating chilis and fever (relapsing)
* abdominal pain
* chest pain that occurs repeatedly(recurrent)
* abdominal pain that is recurrent or with similar pain in past .
* join pain that occurs repeatedly(recurrent)
hip pain ,knee pain, ankle pain, foot pain ,hand pain.
* skin lesions that are red and swollen and range from 5-20cm in diameter.

Signs and tests
there is no specific test to diagnose this diseas. sometimes analysis of the chromosomes can help.elimination of the other possible disease by laboratory tests or x-rays will help determine the diagnosis.

Treatment

the treatment is symptomatic and supportive.Colchicine can also help both during an attack to prevent further attack.

Prognosis
No medicine to completely cure the disorder is available.

Dear tig members...this information is from yahoo health and a personal experience.....

Hello all!
I'm a medical student and it really makes me happy to see that some youth are interested in medical knowledge and look for data about some serious diseases. So thank you Batoola for starting the thread.
Well, I haven't reached the clinical stage yet, so I haven't studied the disease in detail but I still could notice that in the information that froot provided about the disease, that the cause is unknown. As the name implies (familial Mediterranean fever) it's an inherited disorder, that's to say; its cause is that someone is carrying the gene of the disease in his chromosomes. And the defected gene has come from a mutation that occurred in the population a long while ago and it found its way to settle down in the gene pool.
As froot has also said, the incidence of the disease is rare. This is because the disease is 'recessive'. Every one of us has 23 pairs of chromosome in each cell, so that each gene on a chromosome has another copy in the same position on the other twin chromosome. If a character is recessive, both of the versions of the gene causing it must be identical. In our case, the fmf will appear only if the two copies of the gene where defected.
As we know each baby inherits one set of the 23 chromosomes from each parent. So for a baby to carry the disease, his two parents must carry at least a copy of the gene (they both could be carriers and none of them has the disease). Thank God, most of the genetic diseases are recessive and some of the famous of them are: Cystic fibrosis, Sickle call anaemia and Thalasaemia.
One more thing. I think colchinice is used to relieve inflammation and it doesn't help in preventing further attacks.
I hope I haven't been very boring and that my points were clear!
