Racism is still out there
September 10, 2005 - 11:17 AM

Its just so surprising to see that there is still racism in this world. People say that now we treat each other equally and don't look down upon others. This is not as true as we think it is. I was not as aware of this until I went for my frist week of university...let's just say that someone used a racial slur against me for my chinese culture. Now back at home, nobody ever offended me or my chinese culture like that. I guess my world was too "small" before I entered university.

Why do people still do this when this world is supposed to have everyone treat each other equally? Why are some cultures still looked down upon? Why do some people feel the need to put others down?

It really is scary to learn of cases of intolerance, hate crimes and agression.
So it should be another student who offended you? I think think that in case of racism and etc the term ignorant crime is the most appropriate. It would really be great if the whole tolerance/intolerance rhetoric (its pretty exclusive in a way) was changed in favour of "get-to-know-the-otherness" approach.
Closedness of cultures is also a reason for agression.

I am deeply disturb when i hear racism as it is a stage we must all contend with.I belive in facing a problem headon rather run away. But, i strongly belive that he who approaches racism must belive that he will be seen as such tomorrow. This is built on the fact of the dynamics of the system which can send you to another country and immagine meeting the one you degraded sometime attending to you. This is the time to allow reason dictate against emotion.

First of all Common - Man, I am not an idiot!! So stop sending me private message on those terms, and saying stuff .. second of all exchanging recipes does not solve serious issues..I do admit though that it creates awareness.

I am posting your private message out here for everyone to read..

"Hey, What are all those things in your blogs and posts. Thirsty for attention? See this is what my friend YongKyeong asked me: "Yes, I already wished Ajay and TIG friend Vivek. Please see blog of idiot Valenska. I already make comment. Why India people like to wash dirty clothes in public?"

I am not washing dirty clothes and I have not expliclty condemned communities, I am merely discussing experiences and views about people and from people... not only this one can only either understand by talking to individuals or by being in personal situations, which form case studies.

And yeah... I have experienced them, and have been mistreated. There are nice people around I do not deny that... but it doesn't mean there isn't a problem. We are talking about rascism out here... and few people do violate other peoples rights on the pretext of protecting their own.. there is a thin line out here.

As far as localised teaching is concerned. It was all over paper.. about the drawbacks.. and they are suffering. I am trying to find a balance here. And yeah, the country has taken the back seat for a few...

Citing another example, Lots of Billboards were dismembered In Bangalore and vandalised and law was taken into the hands of a few miscreants on the pretext of protecting the language. because the bill boards were in english... if people don't like it or want a change.. then whats the law for?

And Devu, you said I was "Thisty for attention??" You don't know who you are talking to honey..

Will it never stop?

"Why are some cultures still looked down upon?"
it sounds to me like you think that only certain cultures are looked down upon.

What do you mean?

Which cultures are not subject to racism???

I would say that all cultures experience racism. Too many people think "racism = racist white man". and this gets on my nerves. These people are as much part of the problem as the people who actually discriminate.

Racism is not really a whitemans thing although fortunately black/white racism has been documented and to most peoples perspective is like when they hear about racism they look at it that way.You will be surprised that in Africa various cultures are looked down upon and a case in point are the pygmiies in the Congo basin and their bantu neighbours.the bushmen in the kalahari are also looked down upon but one of the absurd and cruel practise that is still going on is that when a bantu dies..headhunters are sent to kill one of the pygmies to appease the spirits!

it will never end - it will only become softer.

And education and communication are the only cures known to man.

I remember when I visited Europe traveling to Nice I was on a Euro-rail train, asleep in my chair - a conductor I saw checking me out before woke me up and asked for my tickets - then he asked for my passport "Lieberman... is that Jewish?" "Oh you are American"

he proceeded to make up some crap about my Ticket not being in order and threw me off the train at some station in the middle of nowhere at 3 am.

Thank you France.

At 5am another train came and got me - the next conducter explained that there was nothing really wrong with my ticket but someone forgot to write a date in somewhere.

Racism will still exist so long as there are ignorant jerks who feel badly enough about themselves that they need racism in order to feel good about themselves.

And Matt - as for it being a White thing - No every race has its racists - to say "white people are racist" is in itself racist - think about it.

I see your picture is from Downtown NY - so you know the area - go talk to the Black Supremicists in Times Square and listen to their jive about the "White Devil" - then tell me only Whites are racists.

Arabs are racist about White people, Indians are racist about Arabs, Whites are racist about Arabs, Whites are racist about Blacks and visa versa - the Chinese are racist about the Japanese and that goes double in the other direction.

You will find Jerks from every culture, race and religion operating under the misguided idea that being whatever race they are makes them superior.

Racists are basically people suffering from some inferiority complex snd to make them feel better they victimise others to satisfy their ego so that they look more superior..just the same way as animals fight for superiority in their kingdoms so do human beings and racism in some way might be connected to this but again we are not animals and thats why its unnacceptable in any form!Luke has really expounded vividly and every culture and society is involved in this vice..

I think Racism is so abundant that I can't comfortably announce that I'm not racist. Sometimes, I note certain generalisations or discriminatory thoughts - and of course, I try to understand why I thought that way and change it - but it just shows how deep rooted some inclinations are.

Every race / cultural identity is subject to racism. I guess it depends on where you are - to feel its effects.

It is hard on everyone - I wonder if people who are "mixed" feel worse about it or not? What about 2nd/3rd generation immigrants? What about "native" peoples?

I guess it's also about the sensitivity of the person/people on the receiving side. But sometimes it's so subtle that it's really an insult to the person if you say they're just being sensitive.

luke - i am not from downtown New York, i just like the statue. smile

just for clarification....
i was just stating how too often i am told that "white" people are 'more racist' than others, and that i thought this was wrong. because i know it is not true.
I know that racism is a universal thing.

as for it being so abundant, i think that if you go looking for it you will find as much as you beleive is there. ie: you go looking for bugs under a rock you will find hundreds.
Heightened sensitivity towards racism could make you very very suspicious.
Why is it that you cannot comfortably annoucne that you are not a racist? Evil is in the intent, not the act.

Again, i know that racism isnt a white mans thing, i just get annoyed when people say it is.

You know what.. this is an interesting topic to discuss.. it is going to be therapy for me.

Where I stay, Rascism is at its fullest. And when I mean rascism at its fullest I mean it! It has resulted in taking its toll on people, by violating freedom of expression and language.

I live in South of India, out here everyone practices this rascism thingy, on the pretext of protecting their own cultures, language and tradition. In Tamilnadu, they will speak only Tamil, if you don't know their language, or are an outsider, they treat you real bad. This was my friends experience and I have heard this from a lot of people. Not only this, they expect you to have had a crash course on the culture and language before you come there. If you say that its rude, they will say, oh alrite, we are only trying to be ourselves and are hoping you will take some of us with you.

Now my experience. I live in Bangalore, India. Been living here for like ages. I do know how to read and write kannada, and can also understand and speak it in a broken way... But you know what?? Its not enough. At my workplace the other day, this lady who is terribly nice just came upto me and started screaming at me saying "If you do not know our language then you have no right to stay here!! Get out!" I was like whaaaaaaa ... This is just one example.. the others are the same... the cab drivers, rickshaw wallahs, bus conducters, shop keepers, etc have advice to give you and things to say!! Basically bordering on the lines that you have to know and speak our language if you stay here or Butt out!! They treat you like sh*t.

Whats worse is that their fanatism has affected them more and not anyone else. They have local schools that are so localised that they do not teach Hindi or English. As a result of which all localites loose out on governmental and national jobs in the army and military. But thats the Centers fault, the centre thats PM Manmohan Singh should make facilities for colonisation.

What I am thinking about is, Hindi is supposed to be our national language, and no one in South India even attempts to speak it. They are so colonised in their approach towards things.. our state first then our country.

I would consider this rascism. And its horrible sometimes the way they treat everyone else. So if you cannot speak or do not speak anyone else's lingo, you should be treated like a dog... since when? Its really quite sad. Sometimes they resort to violence on the basis of language and vandalism, where people take the law into their hands.

Whats even worse is, they discriminate on the basis of color. Yeah I got that part of the parcel too. Unfortunately I do not look Indian, even though I am and am on the fairer side and that pisses the locals off. I feel horrible sometimes because of it and wear a darker foundation when I am going into local gatherings. And its supposed to be my fault... because?

Violence with respect to language, color, traditions, customs..these are another set of things we are dealing with right now, but the thing is, no one is speaking about it out here...

Its a universal problem & racism comes in different ways some according to ethnic group, culture, colour, religion ...etc.
For instance Arabs/ Muslims are sterotyped in movies & unfortunately most ppl tend to believe that its true, unless they have visited other countries, interacted with them or are open minded enough to accept others.
Personally i think i've become more tolerant& accepting others(not that i didnt before) but now im more accepting and its all because of the TIG dicussion board.
I do hope ppl will do the same.

Dreamscoper,

I spent almost my full summer in India and mainly in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. I till now have not met nicer people. But inter-region racism exists everywhere. You know North and South Italian have problems? Their only difference is skin colour. Your majority party leader Sonia Gandhi is South Italian. She wrote in a book about how North Italian mistreated her family when she was young.

Quote by my good friend Luke

"You will find Jerks from every culture, race and religion operating under the misguided idea that being whatever race they are makes them superior."

This is exactly the case 100%.

Luke: "Indians are racist about Arabs"

Where did you get this impression from? I stay in India and have travelled across the breadth of the country but I haven't found even a single Indian who is racist about Arabs. I don't understand what you are trying to tell there.
From that it appears as if you are trying to say that Indians (meaning all Indians) are discriminating against Arabs. I feel awkward with that reference to Arabs. We have had strong cultural ties and trade with Arabs for thousand of years. Where did you find racism in that?
Please clarify.

Devu

He only meant racist jerks. He did not mean all Indians. I know hotels in Mumbay which no allow tourists from Arab countrys. I was told by UAE man on Marine Drive.
