Is there such a thing as...

I'll give you some background and then pose my question. At university I majored in history, and as part of it took a Canadian history course. As part of that course I learned things about Canada's treatment of First Nations, and other issues that I had not known before- they weren't taught in depth at the highschool level. History to me, is meant to be learned from, so we don't make the same mistakes of the past, and if some mistakes are grievous enough, to correct them.
So keeping this in mind, I got to thinking: Is there such a thing as a true history of a country? And if so, do you teach everything (or near everything- because I know some countries have very long histories)mistakes and all?
Anyway, I just thought I'd post this here- feel free to move it if it doesn't fit with the theme of the board.

There's no way to know what the 'honest history' is of a nation. Especially since back then, when people were writing books on these matters, censorship was heavy. So many, MANY facts and figures would have been distorted. Over time, people just took these as factual historical data and continued teaching.
Many teachers nowadays don't even really give a damn about what it is they are teaching. Education has turned into a numbers game. Kids just want to get higher and higher grades so they can get their foot into colleges of their choice, rather than actually LEARN and implement what they learnt.
As for Canadian history, several important parts... like the one you mentioned about the ill treatment of the natives, plus the rise/fall of the Ku Klux Klan in Sask.,(and other places) is usually conveniently left out. These books only tend to focus on the positives. I really don't agree with that at all because that way, people are not aware of the mistakes that had been made and what the consequences of those were... then these mistakes are just prone to repetition!

hello,
Interesting question and interesting answers.
Anyhow, history is areollection of facts that happened sometime in the past.
By definition the history is the OBJECTIVE recollection of facts, but then we all know that every country is teaching history according to its political/social/economical views and majority of sensitive/controversial issues are usually left out or rewritten in a way a reader will get totally different opinion about the said event.
This being said, know that usually anything and everything that cmae to us in a written form, carries one way or another the bias/prejudices/thoughts of the writter. Bible, Koran, Tanakh and any other religious/historical/political or whatever else coming to us from the past carries the bias of its writers, whether intentional or unintentional.
My advise to you: if you want to know the TRUE history as you expressed, you need to read multiple independent sources and of course filter out all the contradictions. Just then you will come as close as possible to the TRUE history!
Cheers and good luck!

i agree with what mnopq has said here. and would like to add, that to get an in-depth look into the events in the past we can also use personal correspondence , letters, articles, fiction etc. National Council of Educational Reasearch and Training in India has decided to make history more open to discussion by adding 'personal' narratives and correspondence in the text itself. i think it is a very sound idea as it will not only promote a better understanding of things but it will also end the monopoly of politicians in power, in rewriting our history syllabus to suit their own ends.
by opening up history for discussion and various interpretations , we can end the false notion of an 'objective' history.
