Social Injustice fuels Racist and Xenophobic Sentiments?
August 10, 2005 - 04:29 AM

Hello Everyone on the Forum!

My suggestion is that the sentiment of social injustice spread among marginalized groups is the actual base for (politically engineered) development of xenophobic attitudes of all sorts.

What's your opinion on that?

Is intolerance a culutural or a social issue? I think it is the former.

What do you think?

"Is intolerance a cultural or a social issue?"

racism and xenophobia (as id name it) can have social (poorness) or cultural (tradition) base or backgrounds. to fight it, or if you like reduce it, you have to analyse it as an ideology of seperation and chauvinism. for instance: racism as we have today developed together with the colonisation. to exploit the colonies and their inhabitants more than the other imperialists, they developed a certain attitude towards the SLAVES (!) seeing them as less human and less worth than whites...

so? racism is not at all natural. nothing towards human behaviour is natural, its social and historically grown (or shrinked). xenophobia may have other more diversive histories in different regions, including different problems (shortage of whatever) regional conflicts etc.

I disagree (with you both).

I think racism is a social issue that existed long before colonialists or even government control. If it were a cultural issue, find me one culture in the world where discrimination doesn't exist.

We have a natural fear of the unknown and it is easy to be afraid of those who are not like us or are from somewhere else. Racism will always exist, but if you want to reduce it you have to educate people.

I completely agree with nGr8.....
its human nature .....we fear what is new ...
we fear what is different ...its even animal instinct ...but as soon as we realize that the difference ..is just superficial and deep down inside ...we are all the same ...we r in peace again ...
Racism ...is a strong word ...
are we talking about racism?....or do we mean prejudices?
cause I think what we need most .as a global community..is to overcome our prejudices ...cause we all have them..
and that ..like nGr8 said ..is by education..and sufficient knowledge
cause prejudice is ignorance ...its all the preconceived judgements..developed, multiplied and maximized ..that lead to racism..
so lets learn more about each other ...
