Can we have a SAFE media?

Media was applauded because it came to promote freedom of expression to counter the 3 traditional powers, i-e executive, legislative and judiciary. Today with the rise of techology of information, media has become a fluide and versatile tool in the hands of the three powers. Came alive to give voice to the voiceless, today it helps to give more spaces to the powerful. On the other hand, media has become an industry forced to commerce its products!
We know the end of the story. Today government controls media and media controls us. Is it safe for us? Is media still playing its role of promoting freedom of expression and ensuring the promotion of civil liberties by the 3 traditional powers?

hi...
actually i agree what my friend wrote above, but i have something that i want to complete...
first on all, i'm a manager of national youth newspaper from Republic of Moldova "Asta DA" and i know very good what means to be involved in media and how much freedom you have...
this is a very intresting topic. In pure democracy, media should be a freedom expresion and an opposite of guverment or a good observer. But, as we know, pure democracy is a myth. No one country reach the real democracy and probably no one would do in the future.
In this conditions, media, like other industris, is a BUSINESS!!! and the beatefull words of freedom of expression are only premise.
From where do you think media takes money to exists? Adverting? OK, what means advertising? Presenting someone in good imagine involve also presenting someone else in bad imagine.... and this means thats not a free media and equal...
that's my opinion....

A good example would be China I suppose - everything is sensored there, any news source from other countries, blogs (my aunt cannot access my blog), music, music videos, movies, internet sites are blocked...
The thing is, this is BLATANT - at least people KNOW it is happening and the people in China know also.
The thing I don't like is those who proclaim they uphold freedom of speech, but do not and actually spread propaganda. Those are the most dangerous of all.
Who can you trust?
