I am making a website for teens about important issues. It has a section about poverty, smoking, teen depression, human rights, homelessness, and other stuff in that genre. What I need from you are suggestions as to what else should be on there and where I can info on these topics, please.

Thats a crucial and wonderful site that will address the core issues affecting the youth. The source of information for the site itself are the youths as individuals and the most effective way is to make the site interactive where individual youths can contribute and participate in the subjects or sections you have mentioned.Look at UNDP reports on poverty and probably bring in WHO reports/research.This information might be helpful in making your plot but please know Youth contribution will be the best avenue and everything else will just fit in... Best of luck!

I have checked out your website and i think it is a great source of information but on the Home page you have provided some links to other sites which i think will work out against the site coz people will be distracted when they visit the links you have provided and coming back to your site is not guaranteed.I would prefer you create a page for resources and publications where you can put other links and materials.later on you can globalize your ideas by bringing in cases from other parts of the world coz you have focused alot on US. As time goes by maybe you will just work out on the layout and provide a forum for discussion or petitions.

Thank you all! I am going to create a seperate page for links because, as you say, it distracts. I very glad you like the site. As for it being interactive, the only way I can figure out how to do that is the way I am; ask people to submit their essays and other writing about a subject. Please, keep the suggestions coming; they have been a lot of help!

Also, on the issue of focusing on other countries, I'm trying to focuse on Christian Persecution in Pakistan. I'm going to put up an essay I wrote on the subject. Otherwise, I'm not sure what I can focuse on in other countries because I don't know what's important to teens in these countries. I don't know what the issues are. Please tell me what you would like focused on.

It's a very nice idea , i think it should include one of the biggest problems that teenagers suffer these days and that is communications between parents and kids and i think that ur source for informations should be the teenagers themselves so as their parents

thats very innovative. u should include a section where issues will be raised and teenagers are invited to interact freely. that way you get to know how these issues affect them. you could also make an open advert of the topics or issues you want to bring out.
as for informations, us the participative observative method. best of luck!

We should wake up
August 2, 2005 - 08:35 AM
|
|
Hi all,
After reading with keen interested the discussion i want to say that.. We as
African's are still behaving like kids and pretend tpo be grown-ups..
We always want everything to be done for us that is why we always
suffer..What i mean is everyone is waiting for either the government or a
non-governmental organisation to take a move for us, we never want to do
something for ourselves...
We find people delibrately sitting at home and not working but they are
married and have given birth to 3 or 4 kids and then they start complaining
of poverty and suffering, its not about being a man or a father but it is
about responsibility..We should always try to be responsible for everything
we do before we can push blaims on people as the cause of our problems..
We always talk about the western world cheating us, but forgetting that our
forefathers gave in to them and made all this happen, African's as a people
are a great nation, we have all the mineral resources here, all the man
power e.t.c but poeple dont want to put theur expertise into work to achieve
something, so if someone comes from teh western world and thinks that "oh
this people are wasting their resources, i guess i have to get something out
of it before they come to their senses then it becomes a problem."
Please my people let wake up, concentrate on our continent, and stop running
away from our repsonsibilities because no matter how far we run, our
responsibilities still awaits us...In the Aqua world, it is always said that
no matter how far the tilapia goes it would one day come back to the ocean
or seas it was born....
We shoudl start by putting our expertise to work in one way or the other.
Let us put love and togetherness between ourselves..Let every Africanproud
of his country start doing somethign about the situation in his or her
vicinity, it does not matter how small you start but someday when you make
it you would always have people to be by you and also get inspiration from
you.

I didn't know Sweden was a no smoking country! Also, I feel very strongly about Christian persecution and trying to prevent it. It is a horrible atrocity that is still happening around the world and needs to be stopped. I have a section on the site about it with the text of Pakistan's Blasphemy Law 295c, which allows Christian persecution. I will be adding to that section with case studies of the people accused under the law and other cases in different countries. I might also include a This month's stories sections in which I put news about what issues are going on in the world that teens care about. I might also start a contest like TIG has in which I choose an issue and post on the site as a topic for teens to write about. Thank you for all the info. You're a lot of help!

Thats good! you are now diversifying your focus by bringing in christian persecution in Pakistan, another way is by quoting on pieces from newspapers concerning what is happening in other places and making them as discussion topics.Just focus your attention on the topics you have provided, that is poverty, smoking, teen depression, human rights and homelessness but include cases from around the world also E.g did you know that Sweden is a no smoking country?Yes its and their parliament passed the law this year. Such topical issues can make the site more interactive. Once you get the interest of teens around the world to your site then you will know more about important issues affecting teens all over the world and things will work out and remember your prayers always but dont forget faith without work is nothing....

You are on the right track and having some topics for teen to write about is already being interactive enough and you know one way or another when teens participate or write about the topics you have provided it gives them an avenue for expression.I don't know if this might help you but their are free softwares that can help you build and manage discussions and online interactions. You might need to enlist your friends to assist you in developing this. They include:-
-phpBB-(http://www.phpBB.com)
Its freely distributable,easy-to-use tool that is installed on your website for discussions and online interaction.
-Extranet Software
eGroupWare(http://www.egroupware.org)
freely distributable extranet software for your website that enables your team to collaborate on tasks, projects, meetings, ideas or any initiative easily and efficiently all in one place.Users have access to centralized information and resources from their own personal home page.
Let me not sound like a salesman but i believe their are many other such softwares that you can use ..maybe check out with the Information technology department in your school they might assist you. All in all i think getting into such initiatives will help you in your personal development...Keep it up!

Thank you very much for the links. I'm using a Tripod free membership so it's extremely helpful to have links to sites where I can get additional tools for the site. You have been a lot of help for this site and so I say thank you.

Poverty is not the issue
August 4, 2005 - 07:56 AM

I would like to say sometimes poverty is a state of mind. Even though some people say poverty is when someone does not have enough or is in dare need of basic needs..
Well how come most people in poverty have 3-4 children, you see the probelm is we just dont want to learn. If you know you cant cater for yourself that mush then why go ahead and marry a wife and have 3 kids..
Instead you can invest some time in working a little harder and try to get something going for ourselves before we take come decisions in a haste..
Please if you cant take care of too many kids dont let them come and suffer in the world, have what you can take care of..And gradually we can tackle poverty..
Well opinions are like noses everybody has one.
