Are the elderly a valuable resource or a drain on progress?

Are the elderly a valuable resource or a drain on progress?

Sure, they can remember events dating back past some of the more modern methods for catalogging news events, but are they a drain on our social resources? Especially in western countries?

Is the knowledge and experience they hold in their minds worth allowing them to be supported by the government. Or should they have stayed working till they could not work anymore?

Spread your views around, quit lurking and post something. String a few sentences together, and you're bound to trigger some sort of discussion off.
