[Poll] Children's Books and Harry Potter...
July 12, 2005 - 09:38 AM

Hello. I was just given an assignment on children's books and what they read and have been told to find out the public perspective about hype surrounding Harry Potter. Not to discredit the fact that, the book has caught the world by storm. We have had Enid Blyton, Comics and Nancy Drews etc. But now there is this craze about this book, Harry Potter.

I have read only the first book though and its good. But is it worth the hype? I wonder. So what is it that is driving the book? Media, marketting? What?

The book has been sold as a package deal. You have small tokens, cakes, confectionaries, shirts, posters, atationery items etc. The book has also been made into a movie, infact more than one movie I think.

So nowadays, how is a book promoted? Is this a new P.R. tactic? Make a movie, and give out the goodies..?

I was wondering if people could throw light on the subject.

(1) Is Harry Potter the best deal? Aren't there more books?

(2) What is driving the book and the children towards each other?

(3) How many of you have read Harry Potter? And what led you to pick one up?

(4) Would you prefer "A series of Unfortunate events?" or "Harry Potter?"

Tell me more about what you think alrite... smile

there are lots of factors that made this book so famous. one is that almost every child dreams of worlds beyond this one. there have been made classics of witches and princess and so on. and everyone enjoyed listening it, when he/she was young ... and in old times these stories were the main attraction, and nowadays harry potter is the one. j.k. rowling has really good sense for writing books, so when you read them you feel like you r participating. her writing style is really good. then the idea of wizzard world is great, and that it is similar to ours, but hidden from us ... so when you finish it u wish sb would come to u and told u, that u r wizzard too. so that's the fact why small things r selling so good. when you read it you want to have everything connected to it. i had this feeling for a month after i read all her books. but i like stories from authors like j.verne, r.dahl ... and all the classics.
i wouldn't read it, if it weren't for movie. i was so against it, since everybody in school read it, even the ones that don't read at all. so i decided i won't read it. but then we had to go to the movies with school. and i liked it and then i decided to read it. and the next day i wanted another one and another one ... until the last one. i must say it is a good book. and if it is readable by the ones who don't read at all, than it is so much better! nowadays children don't read enough because of the media. so if it is promoted good, and if children read it, there is nothing wrong. maybe in some time they will start to read old classics or other books, too.
sure, media does sth ... and promotions ... or in some cases, like mine, it convinces you not to read it ... ppl r different, so r books, and that's the magic we need!!

p.s. this topic is really interesting!!

dreamscoper, any time for such a good topic!smile i'm happy u posted it in heresmile

and about your question. partly it does, and that's just because of the idea of this world, and the author's brilliant style of writing. but, i don't know, some don't see the real eccense, some do. it mostly depends on human mind. u must know that not all are thinking the same way. partly the hype takes it away, partly not. personally i'm not a fan of this book, but when i'd read it i was all "i want it more", but then in a while i got chilled. i prefer more serious books ... if u have more questions to ask, don't hesitate! smile

one more thing....

i admit that good P.R. helps a book, movie, serial, etc to sell. Whichever form it takes, marketting has become the key. But what about long time sustanence, what does that depend on? For example, in the long run, say 10 years, even 30 yrs, who will remember the book, and how will they remember it? Does a commerically viable product become a classic?

hm ... well, harry potter exists quite a long time (six years), and i think this particular book will exist among ppl for a long time, i think it is almost considered as classic. but we more know examples when authors weren't popular and their books became famous after their death, so theorethically, hp won't exist long. but, as time is passing, cultures are changing and so does the way how long the book will be known among us. some books won't last long, but some will ... but who cares about that right now?! ppl are loking too much just how they will earn money, but there are also ppl who care what they pass on. for a book to last it must contain a theme that will be popular and interesting for everybody, and then time makes its own job. how long will it last is mostly still a riddle, a mistery to us, since we don't know what will happen in the future. we can just predict ...
