Do you believe that it is right that the international community and organisations such as the United Nations should intervene in circumstances where there is severe violaion of human rights? Or should something like that be confined to the affairs of the Sovereign state?

the UN should be able to intervene because they often help shed light on these atrocities

we as humans know what is right from wrong. it all has to do with educatin ourselves on the importance of respecting our rights as humans. where violation of these rights occurs, it should be reported and treated as urgent aspossible. i am happy that the human rights bill has being passed. it therefore gives legality to citizens of a state.
victims should be made to have a sense of belongin as it will go a long way to help. but the issue of corruption is still a major threat to attainin the purpose or aim of the human rights programme.
if corruption is addressed, im sure the aim will be attained.

The horrible thing is that many people falsely belive that atrocities such as genocide and torture died with Hitler's concentration camps. This is the case with many teenagers. Many teens don't that they have power regardless of their age becuase they have a voice.

One can always talk, speak out loud about abuses, forget what people can say if you talk, I believe the biggest problem that has to be faced when defending human rights is silence. Women should cry out loud when men abuse them, families should listen to children when they want to talk, one has to read, investigate, write all the time. Human Rights Watch and other organizations, there is also Amnesty International, use the urgent alerts networks to mobilize people all around the world. And the most important thing: I believe that if I do not stand up for my rights, it is difficult that anyone else will. People must demand respect for their rights. Sometimes it is dangerous, it can lead to death or dissapering or more abuses, but if we don't talk now, then we will never do it. big grin

Having had experiences of being abused, (although not by my parents. . .), its allright for us to jus sit here and talk about it but to intervene its kinda hard, mainly because theres so much of it, in every way human rights are being abused but to stop it is like trying reason with a bear with a sore head, you just leave it alone.I have friends that get abused like everyday, one of my best friends has been raped for the past 8 years by her father. The reasons she doesnt speak up is because of her mother, if she says anything then her parents relationship goes down the drain and it would hurt her family too much.especially her brother. so how can we fix this while taking into the account of the consequences at the other end??

Since there are many different types of human rights violations, perhaps picking a more specific problem - like media "censorship" - is a helpful start.

You can always try to find alternative sources of information like indy radio stations or the internet. Geting news from places like Human Rights Watch or Amnesty International and telling other people is easy for anyone with internet access.

Reading blogs is another way to gain insight into certain areas overlooked by journalism. Although accounts may be highly subjective or possibly untrue, there is the possibility of learning a lot about someone else's perspective. I don't have any I'd personally recommend, but perhaps you can search for TIG members who actively blog - it's likely they'll be interested in similar issues like human rights.

Anyone else have any suggestions for alternative sources of info or sites/blogs they like?
