Affiliated with.....

okay, here is an issue that is becoming really annoying!
i used to look at TIGers profile, see that some are affiliated a dozen of organisations and just tell myself that the majority are actually not, they were just pretenders, but since then i've been contacted by some of them pretending they were from this or that organisation whereas they are not,...i know it for sure as i know some of the orgs they are pretending being affiliated with...
If it was a feature before, now it's become a necessity to make it controlled, moderated by an administrator. i htink you should rally add this: no body can put he/she's affiliated to an org unless the contact person of that org accepts him/her...
I also noticed how much the web site is being used as a meeting site, and i'm just being annoyed by this kind of messages:" hi, i saw your profile, like very much your picture, can we become freinds "...if someone has any idea about getting rid of that, without the option of removing my picture coz i still want to be in touch with the majority of other TIGers...???
it's bad to notice it, but the more members in there, the less ethics there are...

In regards to affliations, with v5, this will certainly be a feature as we noticed this a long time ago with TIG (as you can see, the list of TIG is huge...)
As for people contacting you, you can block them as they come in or disable your TIG messenger, but as with any other community, it is hard to stop open and free communication. If you have any suggestions as to how we might fix this, I would be really happy to hear them!

Authenticated Instant Messaging

I think this what your after. Instant messaging with security. Doesn't exist yet as it only really needed across domains, and most communities like TIG ignore the fact studiously. But it's working its way out of the academic silos, like a lot of other commons stuff.
http://commons.internet2.edu/about
As remote working groups, hidden away inside their old fashioned institutions, consider their next steps.
http://www.internet2.edu/pubs/rtc-next-steps.pdf
Ever considered running a survey about what combination of tools might suit TIG's extra-institutional community members?
best regards,

Peace!
Rim pointed at two important things that happen on the TIG website: The first thing is related to honesty; members trying to prove falsely that they're involoved in as much activities as possible....and second, the new strange stampede of messages demanding friendship from certain members for different reasons.....
I just dunno how I can "block" a certain TIG member from sending me messages......can anyone help me?

Hey Ayman,
When a members sends you a message on your TIG IM, you will find, while viewing the message, a button called ignore user, you can click it and you will move to another page which will as you to provide a reason (optional).
By Ignoring a member, you wont get messages from him an you wont see his activites appearing on the homepage.

The nice thing about the comms tools available today is that regardless of their shortcomings in functionality there's always a work around, as Moustafa pointed out.
But isn't the idea of this comms stuff to, put up a brief description of the type of group you are attempting to get together, and learn with, and let them into a place where they can find one another. The metaphor is one of a virtual room, where someone has to be responsible for the keys to the door.
So all we can see on global BB's like this, are lots and lots of conversations, where no one can actually see anything get done, equally. But you can always learn how to work around the 'shortcomings' of the site created by dishonest people.
Pity, cause most people are so nice, honest and trying to actually get something done. But why is it that insist on designing things without accounting for the human factor.

It's hard to control the affiliations thing, I mean, even the organisations themselves have trouble keeping up with new comings and goings...
I'm all for honesty, I just can't think of a solution right now. I guess you just have to take people's profiles not that seriously.
But then people lie in their CVs which are supposed to be serious.
Who knows.
Humanity aye.

Not everyone who puts organisations on their profile page are actually lying about affiliation - some people put the organisation there because they want to show an interested in that organisation.
For this reason, I think we should assume the people of TIG are more honest than some people are suggesting.

Organizations who are claimed on TIG can control and moderate that list now -- also -- we are thinking that it would be good to have an organization have 'friends' or 'admirers' and then also affiliated people, so that we can show the difference!
