Good morning from the Pacific Youth MDGs Summit in Apia, SAMOA!
We are about to start our first session for Day 3. So far, we have had a fantastic time learning about the MDGs and sharing our country experiences with other youth delegates.
Here is a summary of DAY 2.
The Summit was officially opened by the Acting Prime Minister of Samoa and the UN Resident Coordinator Ms Joyce Yu. This was followed by the launch of the Pacific Plan Youth Essay Competition by the Island Forum Secretariat.
Our friends at WHO presented a special session on HIV/AIDS and Ms Jackie Badcock, the UNDP PNG Resident Coordinator highlighted the need for young people to focus on early prevention and educate our peers about HIV/AIDS.
Day 2 also saw several presentations from Pacific youth leaders who have attended the previous conferences such as World Youth Congress, Pan Asia-Pacific Youth Leadership Summit and the BPOA Youth Visioning Meeting to talk about their experiences and to inspire the current Summit participants to take action when they get back to their home countries. UNICEF provided information on how Declarations can turn into on the ground action.
Day 3 was a hands-on day, with Tagata Vainerere from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community detailing the contents of the Pacific Plan and what it means to young people. Linda Peterson from UNDP Fiji summarised the MDGs and their related targets and indicators.
The participants then broke up into 8 MDG groups to identify key issues affecting youth and developing recommendations for each issue. These issues were also linked to the 4 key goals of the Pacific Plan.
In the evening of Day 3, the participants attended a formal UN Reception where delegates from the Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau, Tuvalu, Solomon Islands, PNG and Vanuatu performed their traditional dances and songs.
Upon return from the reception, the drafting committees worked on the first draft of the Pacific 2015 Declaration and the Youth Statement on the Pacific Plan.
Today, the participants from each country will prepare their National Youth MDGs Action Plans which will provide a framework for strategies to implement the Pacific 2015 Declaration to attain tangible outcomes.
