I'm interested in getting my high school involved, but my school has extremely strict regulations for fundraising-- we had to go through so much just for permission to raise money for tsunami relief. What else can my friends and I do other than raise money?

Voice of Chebiegon Kagongo from Kenyan

Here a mail I got from a young and find it interesting :
"The situation in Kenya is not so different from that is Tanzania. But the general feeling here is that the benefits of economic growth do not trickle down to the majority of the population which lives below the poverty line, three quarters of the poor live in rural areas. Many feel that the government should be at the fore front in leading the fight against poverty but it seems that nongovernmental organizations and the private sector are the ones spearheading the fight. Corruption is one of
the main reasons why the rich get richer and the poor remain poorer. Funds allocated to projects aimed at reducing poverty are channelled to other uses. Kenya's education system produces thousands of qualifies job-
seekers but lack of employment leads them all back to poverty. Our education system should be aimed towards empowering the youth to be self-employed. The current government came into power mainly on their pledge
of zero tolerance to corruption and the promise to create five hundred jobs a year. But their efforts to achieve these goals have left a lot to be desired. The government should be the leader in efforts to reduce poverty."

That is a rather interesting letter .... and I understand completely what the person means.
Corruption as we must all see it is inevitable ... man cannot and will never rid themselves of corruption, however, we can try our very best to lessent he occurences.
Unemployment is inevitable in all developing countires fromt he low to the middle income ones. Its for us to start creating jobs of our own. And to stop criticising our government and start giving them suggestion and let them knwo what we stand for.
I understand the situation with the Government versus NGO's but whatthe NGOs are doign is good. It is for everyman to start realising that development and better living standards is not soley dependent upon the government but also on us. It is for everyman to realise that the end to everything starts at the grass root. Not to say that government wont be involved but they will see themseves as mere citizens.
As I was sharing with someone the other day in regards to the crime rate in Jamaica, he misunderstood what i meant by community and that the people should be the one to lead the revolution to end the crime. Just to say thatwe will all work for the best the politician will stop assisting those who are not abiding by the law, will stop giving the man on the road a money instead of letting them work. and so on ..
in the same way we must all see ourselves as key factors and beneficaries to this whole development and achievemnt of the MDGs.
