Pacific Youth MDGs Summit
May 9, 2005 - 05:23 AM

Talofa TakingITGlobal members!

This is a message to update you on Day 1 of the Pacific Youth MDGs Summit in Apia, SAMOA.

The Pacific Youth MDGs Summit is organised for young people for young people, to provide an opportunity for the Pacific youth to voice their ideas and issues on the MDGs.

The Summit has been funded by the MDG Trust Fund and supported by the United Nations Country Team in Samoa, the Government of Samoa and the Youth for a Sustainable Future Network.

Today is the first day of the Summit, with participants arriving from thirteen island countries including Tokelau, Samoa, Cook Islands, Niue, New Zealand, Australia, Tonga, Fiji, PNG, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Kiribas and Palau.

The Pacific youth leaders will convene for 4 days to produce 4 key outputs:
The Pacific Youth MDGs Declaration
National Youth MDGs Action Plans (for each country)
Youth Statement on the Pacific Plan
Strengthened Pacific Youth Network

This Summit focuses on key tangible outcomes that have direct linkages to other international and regional policy documents and conferences. It is all about putting youth on the MDGs agenda for national policy making.

I will keep you posted on the outcomes of day 2.

Co-Founder & Co-Coordinator, Youth for a Sustainable Future

Criticality of adoption of prayer 5 times a day by all for sustainable future
May 9, 2005 - 07:01 AM

Adopiton of prayer 5 times is critical for transforming leisure use pattern. This is need for minimizng hte consumption of utilities and services based on the consumption of fossil fuel. Adoption of prayer is good for personal wellbeing.Adoption of commands against usury is another faith based common that needs global attention as there is a need to stop creation of fictitious money through usurious finance system. Still another faith based common command against adultery and homosexuality needs global attention for preventing AIDS and other diseases generated out of immoral behavior. Thus we can see the imporatance of global adoption of faith based instruments for realizing MDGs related to AIDS and debt.Youth have a wonderful role to play as leading communicators for pious behaviour and standards.

Pac Yth MDG Summit
May 9, 2005 - 07:24 AM

"iufala hao" Halo!

I would like to congratulate the PYSF(plus others) for spearheading another 'wave break' for the pacific future. Like alot of other treaties anticipated to be for the good of the pacific future this is another one of them. Extraordinarily the treaty or "Pac Youth MDG's declaration" is one that has the immediate potential to be effective and dynamic, it should be the turning point for alot of setbacks in the islands. Obviously because (of the fact that) it is youth driven.
For it to be effective is to make sure that youths understand and know about it. How will youths in the Solomon Islands know about this declaration once it is being stamped in Samoa?
Get it into the schools into the 'curricula'. Include 'pacific studies' with a whole section/chapter on the MGD's youth related issues into the 2nd and 4th form (sec sch) to maintain the ongoing discussion for the MGD in the next ten years. Make it a before easter (period) thing, Or make and (during mid semester holiday)
The berlin wall, cold war etc etc is important to understand and know about per se!
Arguably as a youth in the Pacific i think it is more important at these stages' we are taught the fundamentals of 'youth'progress in our society as gradually our past tends to celebrate within us.

Pass my regards to the Solomon youth ambassodors!

The best way to prevent AIDS is fighting poverty and educating poor people!

Muhammad, instead of blaming specific groups (like homosexuals) for the spread of AIDS, you should have a closer look at the causes of the problem - then you will also find the right solutions for how to prevent the disease.
I invite you to have a look at our flashmap: http://www.takingitglobal.org/flashmap/ and check the map for "HIV Prevalance Rate". As you will see on this map, AIDS is mainly a problem in Africa (especially Southern Africa) where people are extremly poor and lack the resources to protect themselves through the use of condoms for examples. Also, large parts of populations are still not even aware about how the disease is being transmitted, which is partly because of bad information campaigns of the governments in those countries who refused to accept for a long time the real causes of the disease, but also simply because of the generally low level of education in those countries.

The best way of preventing AIDS is therefore to raise people out of poverty. People, especially young people in rural areas, need to know how the disease is being transmitted and how they can protect themselves. Edcuating poor people will help much more to prevent the spread of AIDS and other deadly diseases than trying to prohibit homosexuality or even praying abstinence as some countries use(d) to do.
