Global Language
February 15, 2010 - 10:21 AM

As it's seen in nearly all countries English is the main language used to communicate with others. But it has had adverse effects on various cultures.

The local language is littered with words derived from English. Also people say that the native language loses it's identity with the advent of Globalization.

This needs attention but actions should be taken in a way not to isolate our cultures from the world.

But this is just my opinion. Any better ideas??

Hi...........

A global language is very important for a society....

Even now we are discussing here using a global language(English)...As Sri Lankans if you use Sinhala can any other foreigner who is unaware of Sinhala understand you?

Also the web developers have to enter all the languages to the web if there is no global language....

So my opinion on this topic is we need a GLOBAL LANGUAGE

What I meant was that English being the Global Language has been affecting cultures in various ways.

True, the global language is necessary but what we want to discuss is what it has been doing to the current native communities.

Yes look at countries like China . Can we use English there easily?

No, most of them cannot understand us!

We should learn their language if we want to communicate or we have to have a translator with us for easy communication.

That's their spirit .....

They love their mother language than any other language in the world.....

Unfortunatly in our country some Sri Lankans think when they speak english they are Posh(COOL) and fashionable. They always try to imitate western culture....and try to become westernised.True there is a culture conflict.
I too believe English is really important in todays world as it is a link language They must use it as a tool for interaction but not as a jewellary.
For this children should be given a good knowledge about the mother tongue and English from their young days.

Im proud to be a SRI LANKAN.

hi

using a global language as a form of communication will forward us to a better future with unity among world nations. i think it is the main foundation of the house GLOBALIZATION......

but.......

if you use this as a weapon to destroy you culture it is very bad.
as knife can be use to cut vegetable as well as it will be the weapon to kill person.Don't kill your own culture being a slave to another culture

Being fluent in another language other than your native language is always advantageous. Even people in the US realize this and some of us also take time to learn other languages aside from English.
