MDGs

As the blah blah blahs of the talkers exchange breaths and wisdoms the worst opposing forces to the needed change for the goals to happen do not budge.
For those of my generation who bought countless singles, albums and paraphernalia and attended the concerts of the "fab four" we see where those messages of peace, love and harmony have now gotten us. Paul Mcartney is the richest rocker in England worth over $1.5 billion(u.s.).
As our recent Global history clearly indicates that some of the most influential members of the U.N. do not give a rats ass about the decisions made by the majority of its members.
When the most powerfull military on the planet insists that distribution of wealth is not an issue to be discussed, negotiated let alone talked about then one can be assured that needed change will not happen unless pressure from more sides and from different methods are applied.
The distribution of wealth is the essence or/and the fuel of all of Mankinds 20th century wars.
As long as some military powers and those who control them insist that it is all right for some to swim in countless lifetimes of wealth while others are left to dry dead, these U.N. Mellinium Development Goals will be nothing but more hot air by bystander in the bleachers.
It has been repeated to me for over 40 years now that tobacco and its smoke is no good for us. Yet, still because it is part of our economy, and needed taxes to support government expenditures whether they be right or justified it still exists.
The wrongs must be hit from all sides if success of all lifes future is to be assured.
I have not faith in one entity alone to win but the culmatative forces from all sides and angles.
epqanna or my writtings/leadership, is/could be, another pinprick to help deflate our (Mankinds) evolutionary wrongs.
Support the effort for real change from all angles, youth of today, parents of tomorrow, grand-parents of the future.

MDGs seen at a global point of view, for sure, won't be achieved. Because none of those who have signed the document really bother to see it becoming a reality. We are used now to the UN producing papers and recommandations for academic purpose, not really to be implemented. Still, the Millenium Goals are important and relevant. It should be achieved. But by who?If we want the MDGs to be achieved, we should fight poverty at every local level. And for that I trust local NGOs not international. Them they fight povery, others fight for wealth.

It is a shame to see you all having such hope especially to say that you are adults who should have a better on global issues than young people. Can I recommend you to visit this site http://preview.thinkquest.org/04oct/01865/index.htm to give you a clear view of the MDGs as well as to encourage your particpation in the MDGs. I must say that the MDGs wont be achieved with our hope of failure. It can be achieved with your help by contributing to one specific goal, start a project or something.
this site has some ideas for you to encourage you to start a project or join a project there are many projects listed here on TIG that are MDG related. http://preview.thinkquest.org/04oct/01865/index.htm

You are right: the MDGs should be achieved! And I tell you by whom: by you!
The Millennium Declaration has been signed by all heads of state, so they should also commit themselves to what they signed, right? But most politicans - in developed and developing countries alike - are only concerned about the next election results. So what we all need to do is show our politicans that we actually care about the MDGs! We want them to be achieved and for us, seeing our government not being committed to the Millennium Declaration, could simply be a reason that we won't elect that government anymore in the next election. I think, if politicans start to realize this, that we - the people of that country - want the MDGs to be achieved, then they will start doing their best to achieve them.
So, don't leave it up to local NGOs to fight poverty. I believe local NGOs are contributing a lot to the fight against poverty already, but they can't solve the problem alone. The poor need much more financial and political support than local NGOs can provide them with. That's why we should all raise our voices and tell our politicans that they need to achieve the MDGs!!

Dear Fraziska,
I agree MDGs are very important for us, for the population. And as such every person, every NGO should focus on one of its goals. Since it is a work on the ground I believe that local NGOs can really help local population even with poor ressources. The job should start and local NGOs should concentrate on issues such as education, governance, gender, creating wealth. Goals have been set so well by the UN and now it is up to us to set the HOW to realise them. Then when we have started we can network between relevant NGOs to share ideas, insight and experience. This will contribute into creating awareness and at the end will hold our leaders accountable, if they still need to be elected by US.

The MDGs are quite a good thing to implement towards poverty eradication but we have to look at to perspectives of world economic management and equal distribution of resources of which the so called are poor countries like Zambia,Ethopia,Sudan are endowed with.
The MDGS are one of those documents of appeasements that the UN driven by the G8 countries.Lets look at the situations on Dafour,Iraq,Afagastan,Democratic republic of Congo,Equiltorial Guinea. Most of these so called cival wars are not idegenousily made but properly financed by more powerful countries and individuals in order to reap and plunder the reources. If really we would want the milleniun development goals to make substantial impact to the suffering of humanity then the UN should have more teeth and look at ways and means on how those economically powerful countries can help the poor nations like the much said about of the Marshall Plan.
Again those that are economically advantaged try to spend exorbitant collosal sums of money in wars, manufacturing of weapons of mass destruction, aeronatics. As for the poor countries they milleniun develpment goals should not be regarded as a panacea to the woos they are facing but as stepping stone towards a better world.Realistically speaking, education,ICT and Agriculture if properly worked on to suit the requirement of the need of a certain village, town and nation can be of great help.
As for the gvts in Africa,it is sad that most of the leaders dwell much on luxuriuos and extravagantly way of life style;posh cars whilest the electrolates languishing in poverty, expensive clothes and houses.
Even a common man who barely eats a meal per day is brainwashed to go for expensive clothes.
Well,if we keep hope alive and analyse our weaknesses on the implementation of the millenium development goals then we can successfully win the fight against poverty by the year 2015 BUT it remains to be done by each of us to have seen a better world.
keep the fire side chart on!

Could someone please help me with the definition of "poverty eradication?" It seems pretty vague to me-- does it mean getting every nation on the first rung on the ladder of global development; or does it literally mean eradicating ALL poverty?

By eradicating poverty, they mean to try as best as they can to lessen the number of persons living in poverty. If you should do some research you would see that there are different types of poverty but the United Nations is simply looking at eliminating the number of persons who are living below or on the newly adopted international poverty line.
And I agree, with angelicum the site has lot ofinformation for you toread upon the MDG, if you have any further questions or need clarification contact the site adminsitrators.

Read this: http://www.youngmdg.com/ymdg2/explore_g1.htm
Goal 1: Eradicate extrme Poverty and Hunger
G1 Target 1 : Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportions of people whose income is less than $1 a day.
G1 Target 2 : Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportions of people who suffer from hunger.
Getting the 1990 statistics is from where we base the proportion of the poverty and hunger population, it should be halve by 2015th.
The title of this thread mirrors the belief of oneself to how he believe to his government and himself, if at the first phase of our goals that we will start to put our faith in the garbage, then really the MDGs are unattainable.

Register for the next Federal Election a new party or at least run as an independent somewhere in this country. Whoever wants me! What post would i be good at?
Then re-reading or getting back to this post i had just realized that instead trying to start a selfish name like "Global epqanna Party", we, i or someone should register as "MDG Party"!
Thanks for all your inputs, you tell/sugest me to search and i am asking to be invited to a or any particular low paying group or direction.
epqanna has nothing to do with balancing and shifting what some of you children call "wealth" or "mean" by wealth! Survival of all life is a higher thought. Why try to attain midiocrity?

All I want to say is: Millenium goals (and any other goals, wishes, ambitions and dreams), if developed from within, are achievable. But if imposed from the outside, always deviate from the expeced.

I think the millennium Development Goals can be achieved. But only if the budgets that will be given out are not put in the hands of one man, or one voice. It is repeatedly the same scenario, a budget given for the good cause of poverty is wasted for someone else's greed. Budgets should be separated in given departments and spread out locally with follow up on how everything is being proceeded. This makes it harder for the money to be stolen. We should all know by now that corruption rules in the heart of african governance. Giving out money to a corrupt government is basically encouraging corruption instead of fighting it. Taking a local stand when budgeting is the base way to achieve the MDG's.

It cannot be a question about whether the MDG's will be achieved or not. Every 3 secondes, a child dies from extreme, stupid, pointless poverty. A sister. A brother. Another one. The world cant afford to sit back and watch this happen. The world has to, however, put an end to this. We are the first generatio that can solve the problem of poverty. That is because we know how big the problem is, and we can put our minds together to make things happen. We have the resources, we just need the minds to make things happen.
Will the MDG's be achieved? Only if the public puts pressure on those who have the power to change poverty. And really, a deathj every 3 seconds because of poverty is not needed in this world today. You just cant ignore that statistic.

Millenium Goals
July 27, 2005 - 04:03 AM
|
|
I think the millenium goals are an important step in the right direction but I feel they are too low level. Really I think what the UN should be doing is ranking the priorities of mankind from the highest absolute and then working backwards defining the ideal circumstance in relation to each circumstance and then actively doing two things. Firstly developing strategies which make those ideals a possibility and secondly not embarking on any course of action which is detrimental to any of the higher pririties.
So far as the food situation goes this represents the first of our opportunties to begin acting to simultaneously resolve. At or near the top of the list is the rise of CO2 and the greenhouse affect (a possible extinction threat) and somewhere near that is third world poverty. The first problem requires a large scale carbon sequestration project to be undertaken so why not begin planting fruit trees. If the poor cant afford food then make it free. Having agreed on the fundamental priorities pass a UN resolution that all manufacturers must carbon neutralise their power inputs by investing in revegetation schemes auditted by the existing accounting profession. Power bill says x value kilowatts = y number of trees to be planted. The cost of things will go up but somebody has to pay to fix the problem. Let them plant in their local areas and begin to provide fresh fruit and nature to their co-partner consumers. This takes away the responsibility of the consumer to establish their own carbon neutralisation projects. It might sound simplistic or even silly but it could be done if we were serious about doing something to address these two problems. There is going to be an issue with compliance because some manufacturers are going to want to deviously escape their corporate responsibilities so you just introduce tax penalties by requiring the accountants to attach the carbon audit certificate to the tax lodgement. The government then funds the carbon offset using tax funds collected. International manufacturers would be required to supply audited documents in order for the product to pass through customs. It could be done with some thought..thats all I am saying. Point is we need to start developing our ideals to the hihest level and begin to harmonise them..because unles we can agree at the top levels of imagination we are going to be creating argument and conflict until the cows come home.
