What are the most effective actions to hold your government accountable?

Several reports (e.g the UN Millennium Project's report "Investing in Development - A Practical Plan to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals" http://www.unmillenniumproject.org/reports/index.htm ) are showing that for the first time in history, we have the chance to cut global poverty in half. With the Millennium Development Goals in place the practical solution and political framework is established and the costs to achieve them are clearly within our range. So what is lacking? The political will of our governments to make the MDGs a priority.
So what do you think can we, as young people, do to hold our governments accountable to the promise they made in 2000? What are the most effective actions?

I believe the most effective strategies to hold government accountable are:
A. Start a movement that uses purchasing power to boycott sectors of the economy. Take the fashion industry for instance, they depend on youth for a large part of their sales. Force them to lobby government for change. Target other sectors as a group. We need powerful allies to push for change.
B. Follow the philosophy of Malcolm X and Push for accountability by any means necessary. Pacifists allow others to pass them by.............

Lobbying and demanding our representatives to do their duty. Afterall, they represent "us" and not just themselves.

I do not want to dive into government too much but I always have seen it as sneaky teenagers running the countries.
I am trying on this following idea. Try it on with me and look at the big picture again in your own way.
For someone to feel accountable they have to be be given responsibilities which they follow through on. Now if someone gets involved in your task at hand then you must share the responsibility and this in turn dilutes accountability. When we get help from others and feel that our effects were so small compared to the whole, then we forget to recognize ourself for the accomplishments we create. Integrity, leadership and power receive reinforcement from within.
The people who work in government are humans too and we should start to see them as such so that other avenues of progress can be opened. They do not walk into a job every day like most people do. They have tremendous pressure on their shoulders and how do they cope? One way is to internalize the "I am small" act to the point of being invisible or unaccountable.
Now what?

The achievenment of MDGs will depend on the level of involvment of each country and its economic situation.
When you look at less developed countries situation( conflicts, democracy,..) it will take several years to achieve these.
I think government must be involved in providing policies in different areas of concern such political environment; gender, youth, agriculture policies matching with MDGS, good governance(decentralization), infrastructures and so on.
But the private sector must be involved at high level as well especially in our less developped countries where goverments encounter problems of implementation, corruption, and other related malfunction......!!!!!!!!
And of course donors will play a great role regarding financial funding constraints they are facing even they may have good will to move forward.
You are welcome to share much on this may be i'm wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a global/international action: protests, lobbying. let's make the international criminal court work. if our government thinks that it has the power to rule over, then it's time to make everybody aware that there's an international humanist/activist groups that are ready to punish those who abuse.

Voting and engorging others to vote is a great way, it seems that voter participation is lowest in nations that have the least accountable ?

It's all well and good to say what we should do, or what should happen to hold our governments accountable eg. that our economic sectors must help, that we should lobby, etc..
But what if, say, for example - I'm a student, but I have dreams of eradicating or even abating poverty throughout the world if possible.. Achieving the Millenium Development Goals... But how can I help make a difference if I'm still only just a youngin trying to establish myself in life?? What household, realistic, things could I do to help fight?? Can I Promote the awareness throughout my university? Or throughout my community? But then, if people have the information, who's to say they'll use it or act on it?
If governments are just human like us, then shouldn't we ALL be held accountable for the things we could be doing to help??

The most effective actions is to get involve, when one gets involve h/she will know the line of action and when one knows the line of action there is understanding, then understanding make one to know when, where and how to hold government accuntable

The most efficective actions to maintain check and balance with goverment would be to go to streets and demonstarte peacefully without disturbing normal daily life activites of other sectors who paly vital role in overall development of country.

Very interesting subject but I would say that different countries would have different approaches to this because of the vast selection of governments. Youths in a country like the U.S for example could come together, and protest againts something on the streets, and get attention, especially from the media. The same sort of march in some African countries would end up in riots which could run into days and the government wouldn't even turn an eye.

I've been stewing over this topic since I first posted a reply and I think lobbying and trying to start movements are quite extraordinary things to do in order to make our governments accountable. You'd have to have a good education, many opportunities that a lot of youth in undeveloped countries do not have. What if we just try to make the MDGs "Cool"? As in, you know how media pretty much rules in this day and age, and the youth are the easiest to market to (they'll buy anything if they think it's "popular" or "in" .. If we projected the MDGs as cool, maybe by writing letters to influencial citzens in your town or region to promote these goals.. Then youth would be more concerned about them and what's going on, and would want these MDGs to be accounted for in government policy???
