Global Warming
March 29, 2005 - 12:46 PM

Is this that much of a problem? well i know that it is a
problem but when it is not on your doorstep, it fades away
from your normal life.
I wrote and article about it for the school newspaper and
afterward i realized how naive i was and potentially selfish
i was being. i was worried about some stupid test in math when i reality i should have been woried about the end of the world.
i know the the world isn't going to end in like five minutes but i was acting like it was never going to happan.
i suppose i just didn't realize how big it was and how many
people it was affecting.
would someone please comment on this really randome post?

sincerly a hypocrite with remorese(and bad spelling)

Rates are the key
March 29, 2005 - 02:22 AM

Scientists mostly agree that CO2 and other gases we are emitting are changing the climate. The controversies are over the rates of temperature change and where the changes will be most pronounced first. For example, we are seeing the higher carbon concentration in the oceans affecting coral reefs.

The other issue raised by the rate question is whether we can adapt to the climate change or if we have to quickly drop carbon emissions. These are not simple questions, but certainly global climate change is real and we will have to deal with it one way or other.

Please /do/ keep worrying about those maths tests! If you wanted to devote your life to helping prevent global warming, you could do a lot worse than doing well at maths, taking a physics degree and getting into it that way.

The Institute of Physics reported recently on how there was a great shortage of physicists going into environmental stuff. You could be developing alternative technologies or analysing environmental monitoring data...

Like you said, the world's not going to end in the next 5 minutes. Likewise you're not going to be able to save the planet in 5 minutes. The most effective path to your goal is usually not the one that looks most direct from the outset.
