Local Gossip
March 25, 2005 - 12:54 PM

I have a question about local gossip. There are many people who are very much worried in their present existence in being a human being about many issues on this planet such as human rights and disease epidemics. How do we go about getting the masses to talk about issues in a local setting? For example how do we go about getting people to talk in their local gossip about mathmatics, education, the environment, and existence when there are people in the media and organized groups which try to control the local gossip with false realities and fear. How do we get the masses to talk about liberation on a day to day basis without brainwashing them? For example in the United Stats we have media talking about medical issues over and over but they don't talk about training people about being medically independant the media would rather put fear in the masses. How do we get people to talk to one another about topics intelectuals talk about in a gossip like setting?

Thai, i totally agree with you that the world today, thanks to the media has only focussed ont he negative aspects of our human life. We are as from the beginning beings of creativity and we have used theis element of our being to our own down fall.
First the government that we are subject to do not allow us to participate effecctively in the decisin making process especially when it comes to chosing priorities that the government is supposed to outline when it is campaigning for a term of office.
In a government by, for and of the people so few people really participate in it. We saw voter apathy in the US elections and the same voter apathy is what is cureently the issue among black resident in the UK elections. Its not that they dont wnt to vote its just that after the vote whats nex? nothing except wait and we'll see how to solve your problems later.

Secondly the media which usually tends to emphasize on independece is somehow somewhere attached to a body which moderates what they can or can not air to the masses. Some information is held and not pupblished, based on claims that that particular information can cause harm to a certain part of society... so called intelligence.
Now the availability of such information plus the processing of this information is what determines what can be taken for gossip and what can be left out of the the local gossip.

Another thing is the isue of development. People esp. in developing countries tend to leave all the resposibility to their gvts instead of taking partin the goverenment efforts to develop their countries. We hear so much about lack of resources on the part othe government but yet ther is alot of resources people have locally with in their habitats. If the leadership doesnt encourage the people to develop inintiatives that can curb crime, promote trade, enhance enveironmental conservation, promote good governance and the rule of law, any such gossip could be taking as contempt of the government.

There for the promotion of the local gossip to focus genuine issues the people themselves have to be aware of what is affecting them which is overall not only segmented to a particular group of people. And the leadership, fromt grass roots to the top have to have an eagles eye open to such initiatives and support them to major projects and programmes that will benefit the locall communities.

People will first have to work on their attitudes. It is poor attitudes which hinder us from progressing positively.

It is however a fact that we need to discuss local issues on local grounds. Local problems will be solved better with local solutions.

There is a saying in my community that goes, "Fimbo ya mbali haiui nyoka" meaning that a rod from very far will not kill a snake. You need to have a rod where you are to ba able to kill the snake.
