Don't get TOO excited

All they did was credit money coming from the Alaskan oil. Even if this budget item gets through the House of Representatives, they would still need to get formal approval to drill. That would take 60 votes in the Senate and they are not there.

It is going to be a long fight over the ANWR drilling and it could go either way.

I have been hearing a lot about this on tv news and on the radio since yesterday. I'm hearing that it isn't really feasible to get our oil from Alaska because it would be hard to drill for it quickly enough to make any difference. Dontcha love American politics? ; )

GAO Report
March 17, 2005 - 09:05 AM

The Alaskan oil in ANWR is about 16 billion barrels (about six months of US consumption). I believe the gas resources have become the prime mover for ANWR these days.

Here is a report from Platts on recent US GAO testimony. Pretty soon we need to rethink energy:

US GAO calls for 'fundamental re-examination' of US energy policy

Washington (Platts)--16Mar2005
The US General Accountability Office Wednesday called for a "fundamentalre-examination of the nation's energy base and related policies," saying the US cannot count on a continuation of "plentiful and relatively cheap energy"
in the 21st century. In testimony before the House Government Reform Subcommittee on Energy and Resources, Jim Wells, GAO director of natural resources and environment, said the "energy systems" that fueled US economic growth in the 20th century "are showing increasing signs of strain and
instability, and the consequences of our energy choices on the natural environment are becoming more apparent." Wells told the panel US demand for energy in recent decades has outpaced the country's supply ability, leading to "rapid price increases and volatility" in some markets and reliability problems in others. "Given these recent and sometimes persistent problems, as well as concerns about the impacts of energy consumption on air, water and
other natural resources, there is a growing sense that action is needed."

Wells said the GAO believes a "fundamental re-examination" of the US energy sector is needed and must take into account three factors. "First, regarding demand, the amount of energy that needs to be supplied is not fate, but our
choice," Wells said, adding that consumers "can play an important role in using energy wisely, if encouraged to adjust their usage in response to changes in price or other factors." Further, Wells said the re-examination must consider that all of the "major fuel sources--traditional and renewable--face environmental, economic or other constraints or trade-offs in meeting projected demand." Because of that, "all energy sources will be important in meeting expected consumer demand in the next 20 years and beyond." He also said GAO believes that whatever federal polices are chosen, "providing clear and consistent signals to energy markets, including consumers, suppliers and the investment community, will help them succeed."
