to some extent, yes. probably control is a rather strong word , but they certainly can affect us and sometimes divert our attentions in a way that they(ie the people who own the media conglomerates)want.

Not as much as they could. I use my "mute" button during commercials! Of course, I'm still looking at the ads...poo.

Media, control, control, us...

In my opinion,
this is media:
Television, Magazines, newspapers, internet...It's all about MEDIA these days. Everywhere I go, there's a model for people, there's a model for the best dress, and there's a model for everything! That's what controls us. Women, have to look like a "certain way" to be "pretty"
For example: Women have to be skinny, long legs, tall, and that one example is what women are trying to be by taking on pills, diet pills, and dieting. That's what controls us. Media also controls little kids, when watching television. I watch television, but I notice that when my little sister watches it, she seems to be inside the show and starts getting all hiper! In Internet, and Newspapers, theres a lot of gossip all around. Many people read what they have and start thinking, oh, that's what's going on and they start to be like that and spreading rumours about people they don't even know the name of. Media, controls us, but the government controls media. And these days, it's all about Media, Government, and MONEY. Internet takes on a big job in it too, it's one of the most technical programs that has the 'bad' stuff in it like bad websites, bad pictures, rumours and etc. And, in my opinion, Media, it is really taking control of us. Well, maybe control is a strong word to use, but maybe affect us in a way. Except for changing channels, and what we CAN do, media can control or more of affect our personality, and the world we live in.

I believe the media has a big tole on what we do but more in a way that it grabs our attention and almost bribes us into unworthy decisions. It just makes this steriotypical ideal person we all want to be but in reality that iideal person is just one of us. media confuses us.

i agree with dancyprancy on this one. media just confuses us. it plays with our mind to make us think that a certain person is who we want to be. by doing this, they play with our thoughts and, not as much bribes us, but influences us. teenagers are easily influenced into doing things, because their between the ages of not knowing about their future, and having a set plan.

I agree with what was said before about "control" being a bit of a strong word... what I would say is that media has a huge influence on the way people live their lives and the opinions they develop.
Also, I don't like to think I'm "controlled" by the media even the slightest bit!

it controls you only if you are weak minded.
but the idea that "government controls media, media controls us" is very simplistic.
I work in the media - no one from the government EVER tells anyone in Hollywood what they can write or say - or what kind of movies to make - it just doesn't work that way (thankfully) -
most people in the media have a healthy distrust of the government.
to begin media is not that organized - it is splint into any number of studios, production companies, networks and cable outlets - which are all competing and all over the place.
there are Producers which make material for all the studios, some who work exclusively -
but competition makes collusion basically impossible.
advertisers certainly WANT to control your behavior - they want you to buy things - and often advertisers have an undue control on television because they pay for it.
But basically - in the end the idea that media influences or controls us - we control the media -
this is a symbiotic relationship - a dynamic one - people create the media in the first place.
