Unfortunately the media became one of the main mind-forming tools. One man used to say that media is the third power in the world. That person was wrong. The world has changed much. The media nowadays is the first power to control the human-masses. It really seems so, in any case, but we have to admit that everything has its master, its owner - and the veiled goals of mass-media can pursue the objects of someone who has simply bought'em. So, who is the real master of our minds? Who knows? And why do they do that?

Who doesn't base his/her information on what's mentioned in the media??
Unfortunatly one has to admit that media does run our lives. Not only because it's one of the main sources of information...the easiest one too, but also because we are not critical enough. We don't question enough. Amd that's exactly what some people or rather countries use.
"All of us who professionally use the mass media are the shapers of society. We can vulgerize that society. We can brutalize it. Or we can help lift it onto a higher level."
(William Burnbach)
"The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses."
(Malcolm X)
Peace.

We all depend on the media for enlightening us. What they say, we beleive since they pay people to gather the information for us. I think its the media that is partly running our lives.

Hey! I didn't know I needed this until you told me!
Nowadays, the line between good ol' valid advice and advertisement under the guise of a sincere public message is so blurred that you can't tell A from B (well, most of the time, though some are real poor at disguising).
Research shows .....
But, who is the major funder behind the research? For all you know, a cancer research is funded heavily by a pharmeceutical company and thus, can we say for sure that the research is not delibrately weighted in the company's utmost benefit?
All players of the Media have an agenda for being in the playing field and each of them is pushing their own agenda, it's up to the consumer to discern (as well as they possibly can) what's really useful and what's just plain bull.

Hello!
Some food for thought...
I think we need to first think about what we mean when we say "the media" - people often use the term sweepingly, as if to suggest it is one homogeneous mass. In my opinion, it certainly is not. For example, there is a huge difference between a television soap opera and a magazine about fishing - yet both of these products could be classed as "media". In short, there are many different types of media.
Also, in a global forum, I think we must remember that types of media can be very different in different countries. Although, admittedly, this is changing, with several television channels and the Internet crossing national boundaries. It would be interesting to hear people's perceptions of types of media in their country and other countries.
Lastly, "the media" is really an illusion, I think - a bit like when people talk about "the state". All types of media are created and run by people (just like the government/state is), so I think it's more appropriate to ask whether the people who run the media run our lives.
In my view, "the media" is not running our lives simply because it cannot. Instead, I think that people can use a type of media as a tool to influence people's lives.
Jimmy

We rely on the media for information before we make decisions. The media tells up which people to vote for presidency, which products to buy and even what to do. This is a perfect example of something thats running our lives.
Any disagreements?

The media is not the sole source of information in our decision-making because we form our own convictions based on a million factors. We may be influenced by media but we are not being controlled by it. When we read or watch something, we decipher whether there is truth in advertising, whether we think it's moral or not. "IF" media is running our lives, there would be no opposition, no leftists. What will be left are conformists, given the fact that most media outlets have very little creativity left and not very significant insight to offer people.

In my opinion, you all posted great comments and thoughts. I agree with most of what I've just read, especially Jimmy's comments. As he said, it is interesting to compare the role of mass media and the disinformation it tends to create in different parts of the world. (I actually had to present a half-hour speech on the subject last week in one of my courses...) but yeah, anyways, just wanted to say: Not every country has the chance to live under a government that promotes/allows alternative medias, but I do. And you'd be suprized at how many people are actually trying hard to create a network of those alternative medias. Check it out, its pretty impressive. Overall, if you have the possibility, choose your sources of information wisely. The main state TV broadcaster isnt a good start. Gotta look underground a bit. This being said, you still got to be careful with what you get even with an alternative source of information. (especially internet, anyone can post any rubbish on there)They tend to be so incredibly opposed to mass medias that they sometimes lose their objectivity. Last little advice, try to validate an information on at least 3 different sources, you'll get a better idea of what to think.
