Trauma
March 16, 2005 - 04:53 AM

Trauma Kills. Trauma maims. Trauma is a disease, it is not an accident. Like heart disease and cancer, trauma has identifiable causes with established methods of treatment and defined methods of prevention. Much can and should be done to reduce the occurrence of trauma and to improve trauma treatment. Trauma and injuries kill one person every seven minutes somewhere in the world. Growing out of proportion from one of the causes of death, it has become a significant health problem throughout the world. The problem is more significant for younger people as they are the most common victims. In some countries, as many as 85% of the total trauma patients are between 15-39 years of age. Developing countries have higher burden of trauma deaths and disabilities. Risk of dying due to trauma is six times higher in Ghana than in United States. Young people throughout the world need to appreciate the impact of trauma on their lives and help reduce the burden of trauma and injuries on all aspects of life.
