[Poll] Do You Feel Safe On TIG?
March 13, 2005 - 11:43 AM
|
|
Do you feel safe displaying your personal information on TIG? Do you think it is okay for young people to put their photos on, tell what school they go to, what they are interested in, how old they are?
What about the possibility that some people on TIG may be unscrupulous, and possibly dangerous?
How are young people being protected in this environment?
I have heard of Teenangels, a group that teaches kids in schools how to be safe on the 'net.
I would like to see more protections on TIG so that all these idealistic and innocent young people around the world are not exploited or endangered for sharing about themselves.
What do you think?
Do you feel safe posting your photo and other personal information on TIG?
Yes, absolutely.
(4 votes for 44.44%)
Somewhat comfortable. I have not heard of any dangerous incidents as a result of posting personal data on TIG
(3 votes for 33.33%)
No, I would not post my photo

Well... I don´t have problems displaying my personal information in TIG, on the contrary, it is being really useful in terms of personal and proffesional development and very important for make new relations with other TIG Members! but... I would prefer that people not logged can't see if I'm logged in.

well, i think the internet is a place where people learn together from all works of life. Example i am from Nigeria i could want to learn from other people from the carriebeans or the asia . One would not call that intruding because posting the information is optional.

Hugh,
Glad to hear that you are interested in ideas to improve the safety of TIG. Here are a few thoughts:
1. Have a safety tutorial that all members need to go through when they sign up or when they modify their profile. In the tutorial, talk about what is appropriate to put on a profile, and ways that they can protect themselves e.g. use just first names and last initials, not last names. Especially important for teenagers under 18, but also for others to remind them about just plain common sense ways to protect their identity.
2. Don't make it so easy for anyone browsing the web to find out about members. This should be a privilege for those who join the community.
3. Make it be a two step process to join the community. After registering, members need to receive email with your authorization before getting into discussion boards.
I'm sure there are lots of other design features that can be added that would make it more safe. Thanks for listening!

We are currently building a new version of TIG and would love to hear everyone's suggestions on this topic!!
The sooner we get new ideas to make everyone feel safer, the better chance we can launch it with the new site!

I would use my own discretion on putting up personal information on TIG... I don't think the internet is a safe place, primarily because Internet Users have still a long way to go as far as using the Internet in a civlized manner is concerned. But then again that is my personal opinion!
I feel putting up a safety tutorial would needlessly alarm potential users... and hence is a bad idea. What you could do is change the edit profile page in such a way that it becomes cumbersome to put personal information such as Address, Telephone numbers, IMs (other than TIG Messenger), and let the default option be not to put any of this information. That way... we ensure that any personal information put up by the user is a conscious effort and that user knows exactly what he/she is doing.
The popular web portals "www.orkut.com" or even profiles on www.yahoo.com, are fine examples of personal information being stored in a discrete manner.
Being a prolific user of TIG, especially TIG Messenger... of late I have come to notice that most members tend to use TIG as a dating site. But then I guess that is inevitable... considering that we have over 70,000 members now... and most of the members are in the age group of 18 to 24.

I am with damina if we can have an invisible mode,
For feeling safe, I feel safe on TIG and writing info about me helps in contact making and getting new friends.
greyarmadillo, you can disable whatever info you want from appearing as the place you are living in, your age and Sex.
You can also disable the TIG messenger if you are getting many bad messages and you can report them as spam or ignore the annoying user. So you chose while editing your profile either to show the info you want or don’t show it.
But I totally support that TIG should send a confirmation notification on the registered e-mail of the user upon registration to ensure that this e-mail is valid as I think many of the users use fake e-mails, although this might annoy the users a bit but it will help more while contacting the users while announcing any event, while calling for something or while doing a survey.
