Schools!
March 9, 2005 - 10:21 AM

Possibly one of the most unhappy places on earth no not realy but they are prity indecent.
here are just a few ideas i thought i would state!
1. Why not start school a little later in the day so us teens can get a little sleep?
2. please take all of your coke machines, corporate advertisement, and crapy school lunches i thought the people in the cafeteria were supposed to cook how about some organic food that is unprosessed and gen moded?
3. I would greatly apriciate it if my school had a free period in the middle of the day 5-15mins of free time to chill, meditate, chilax,or do work.
4. heck why not have classes where the kids teach the teachers.
i had a bad day at school just some ideas...
peace....

i agree with u. It's true. there's no need for ur to wake up at 7 or whatever and go to school. we don't have enough sleep or time to relax in the morning. We only have 17 years of childhood. do we really want to look back at those 17 years and think about school all the time? i don't think so.

bad day at school
March 14, 2005 - 04:29 AM

I would have to say your post about having free time in school day or teachers learning from their students ...
I have been teaching for 10 years now and there is not a day that goes by that I do not learn something from my students. It is one of the reasons that I am a teacher to learn more about learning.

Keep hope there is always tomorrow. Get invovled in your school may be then the daily schedule could be changed. I would argue however that lunch is a scheduled time to chill out with your friends or meditate it is for me every day

What changes would you suggest Abdul182?
March 17, 2005 - 01:08 AM

I am curious to know what changes you would suggest to the school system to make improvements? Would it be possible to take everyones requests into account? Which ones should be given first priority?

I agree sitting in a cafeteria is no way to spend a lunch break. In Australia (at least in Sydney schools) students are not offered inside areas to sit where they have to eat at tables. They are free to run around the school grounds twice a day. They start later around 9 am and have more breaks thourghout the year while the overall holdiay time amounts to pretty much the same as the States.

I am wondering if the structure of school was changed would that improve the overall experience?

Honestly, people don't care what kids have to say. Kids have complained about school being uncool for years and they haven't done anything to change it. It is almost like the hazing academic... you don't go through high school unless you're given some difficulties... and as a senior in high school... I would say... "Tough it OUT!" smile

i am moving to Austrailia and yes it is all about the structure..... if we were alowed to have 20 mins of free time to speak with teachers and go outside it would be wonderful my
jr. high is the worst in the county we at least have 5 fights a day and i think if we had a litle time to relieve our stress and walk around it would be better....

changing the structure
March 19, 2005 - 05:24 AM

So if it is all about the structure then you are happy with what goes on in the classroom?

The interesting dilemma that Australia is going through which the US does not face is severe public exams at the end of high school. Year 12 students take 4- 6 six major courses that they study the last two years of high school and then take exams that generate a one off mark that allows them entry (if they want to go) to certain courses of study at university. They need to average something like 99% plus to go to law school or med school. AS a result there is unbearable pressure to succeed. Success or failure determines your course of study and job opportunities. AS a result Australia has the second highest teen suicide rate in the world after Japan who has even more strenuous and complete exams. Structure is again the problem.

How else are schools to be organised? What can be done to change the systems? Is the grass always greener on the other side of the fence? This is an issue that I often wonder having worked in school and attended schools in various places in the world. Are we always sick of our situation and think that others have it better?
