I went to a bookstore in Toronto last week and I was extremely upset by the following two things.
1)I was looking for the "Womens Studies" section for some Feminist history books I was looking for.
The section consisted of two shelves. While books for male readers consisted of 20-40 sections.
2)Then as I was browsing through the magazines it had "Women's Interest" magazines, which consistented of:
"Lose 20 pounds in 20 days",
"How many ways to please your man,"
"Delicious Desserts for that party your hosting"
"Best Ways to clean that dust away."
AND Pictures of beautiful 5'8, 115 pds models as "house wives, moms, and young girls.

I was so mad about this "Women's Interest" section of the store because how many young girls will look at this section when they go to this store and think..."Oh my God this is what I need to do, or I need to look like this...I need to follow these few steps and I will "please my man".

Then doctors wonder why there are so many cases of eating disorders in young women. Take a look at what society is feeding women about how they should look.

As I looked at the other magazine sections their were "Car" sections and "Sports" section for men, so why can't women be interested in sports?, Why cant girls have magazines with cars and naked men together? Because the "gender-roles" are that women cook, clean, and diet while men work, buy cars, play sports, and are sex crazied animals.
This shows that there has been very little change in societies views on Women, just because we can work the same jobs and expect equal rights, doesnt mean we are respected as humans. Our society is still under the Capitalist and Patriarchal systems.
But we shouldn't take this as a block in our path we should view it as a challenge. This is just another reminder of what we still need to do in order to be respected and appreciated in society.

Happy International Womans Week.

Hi Kerr,
I live in Toronto too, and i recommend going to the Toronto Women's Bookstore on Harbord (near Spadina).
http://www.womensbookstore.com/
You'll be amazed at the selection of books and magazines there -- it's so awesome. Maybe you've already been.
But for sure, I totally agree with you that most bookstores have an embarassing idea of 'women's interest' -- in fact my girlfriend used to work at an independent bookstore in winnipeg and was given the 'women' section which used to comprise of really elementary books pertaining to upper class women's lifestyle like hosting, decorating, shopping with your girlfriends, spiritual health etc. She changed it into a Women's Studies section and got them to order books on feminist theory, and really challenging cutting-edge stuff. Don't lose hope -- and seek out the cool bookstores. Another good one is Pages (Queen st.) near MuchMusic. Some good mags to pick up are: Herizons, Good Girl and Shameless (canadian); BUST, and Bitch: A Feminist Response to Pop Culture (American).
Happy Reading!

I can't agree with you more, I'd be upset as well it seems as if society is putting pressure on us as women. I have always had this issue about looks and weight and I feel if I didn't concerntrate more on my weight in high school I woud have been happier and enjoyed those best years of my life. You watch TV they tell you how to lose those pounds and it's crazy because those things are not real they'll even say now we found the formula that really works and I just hate it.Women are strong out there they want to live life work and be happy so not only to cook and concerntrate on weight. THERE'S MORE TO WOMEN THAN JUST THAT!!!!

Marketing strategy!
March 26, 2005 - 11:57 AM

hi kerr,

i can't believe that a store has this divide for men and women.i think u are just seeing the ur side.if such a divide exists, then it's a sad story.About the books in the women section,i think the books are kept there only b'coz women are buying them.if u people don't buy them ,they will not keep it.It's a marketing strategy.I have personally seen women who are concerned about their weight, recipes, etc. While men are more interested in cars, sports, women etc.So if women starts buying such books,u will see a car, sports section for women. So it's the interest that matters here.
