Who Is God?
February 28, 2005 - 02:55 AM
|
|
WHO IS GOD? This is a simple but very sensitive question to ask any body who professes to know God. It is a question that queries the very intents of the heart. How you answer this question portrays your relationship with God; the level of intimacy and your reactions towards God hangs on how you see Him.

who is god, as you said the way someone asnwers this question reflects their personal understanding and relationship with god.
i do not believe in god the an all mighty creator. Personally i believe that long ago when primitive man were unable to properly explain events or unable to control certain aspects they found it comforting to think someone else was looking after them - someone else was in control, hence the creation of the god idea. in an essence i believe it places the balme out of human hands by saying god wants this, or god requries that, or my actions justify the right belief etc.
The unvierse is on a equal balance, everything happens over and over again - the universe expands, collapses, and expands again. we are here by chance this time around - so make the most of it. In the end it doesnt matter if you believe in god or not, i dont but i still want peace and good will spread out over the world as do many religous people.
In the end it still boils down to you making a choice - so choose the option that will benefit you, your fellow man and the planet. It does not matter whether or not there is a god or not.

PROOFS AND EVIDENCES OF THE EXISTENCE OF GOD
February 28, 2005 - 11:20 AM
|
|
This here is an excerpt of the book Some Answered Questions. These words came from the mouth of the Beloved Master: Abdul'Baha.
PROOFS AND EVIDENCES OF THE EXISTENCE OF GOD:
One of the proofs and demonstrations of the existence
of God, is the fact that man did not create himself:
nay, his creator and designer is other than himself.
It is certain and indisputable that the creator of man
is not like man because a powerless creature cannot
create another being. The maker, the creator, has to
posses all perfections in order that he may create.
Can the creation be perfect and the creator imperfect?
Can a picture be a masterpiece and the painter
imperfect in his art? for it is in his art and his
creation. Moreover, the picture cannot be like the
painter, otherwise the painting would have created
itself. However perfect the picture may be, in
comparison with the painter it is in the utmost degree
of imperfection.
Contingency is the origin of imperfections: God is the
origins of perfections. The imperfections of the
contingent world are in themselves a proof of the
perfections of God.
For example, when you look at man you see that he is
weak. This weakness of the creature is a proof of the
power of God, because if there were no power, weakness
could not be imagined. Then the weakness of the
creature is a proof of the power of God; for if there
is no power there could be no weakness; so from this
weakness it becomes evident that there is power in the
world. Again, in the contingent world there is
poverty; then necessarily wealth exists, since poverty
is apparent in the world. In the contingent world
there is ignorance; necessarily knowledge exists,
because ignorance is found; for if there were no
knowledge neither would there be ignorance. Ignorance
is the non-existence of knowledge, and if there were
no existence, non-existence would not be realized.
It is certain that the whole contigent world is
subjected to a law and rule which it can never
disobey; even man is forced to submit to death, to
sleep, and to other conditions - that is to say, man
is certain particulars is governed, and necessarily
this governed one must have a governor. Because a
characteristic of contingent beings is dependency, and
this dependency is an essentail necessity, therefore
there must be an independent being whose independence
is essential.
In the same way it is understood from the man who is
sick , there must be one who is in health; for if
there were no health, sickness could not be proved.
The least change produced in the form of the smallest
thing proves the existence of a creator: then can this
great universe, which is endless, be self-created and
come into existence from the action of matter and the
elements? What a strange mistake is such a
supposition!

So just because a guy wrote some stuff years ago with no more proof than his own thoughts to back his arguments he rings true? so if i were to write somethings based on my thoughts, in years to come would people hold them as the truth?
if god created the unvierse then there must be a place where god existed (assuming he does) for him to have made the universe - if that is the case who created god? if he was created then god is not omnipotent just another form of life, which is not worthy of any form of worhsip.
let me put it to you like this, an almighty god a creator of everything must be omnipotent. beyond time and dimensions, hence if he/she is beyond time and dimension then in an essence he is dimensionless = a void = nothing.
if god knows all then he must know what he will do, but if his actions are known to him then his actions are predetermined which negate him/her being omnipotent.
Besides there can exist no free wills at all if god is almighty. If you had a free will, god wouldn't know what you would do tomorrow and wouldn't be omnipotent.
besides having a god in a manner as described by many of teh major religions creates paradoxs, can god create a wall that he cant even break? can god create a river so wide he can not swim across? it can go on like this.
and besides the defining factor for me is that we are apparently the only ones in the universe? why go to all that wonderous effort if we were to be the only ones here? and if we are not alone then that negates the egocentric view of many of the religions.

I agree with that statement 95% because that statement is sensitive. Also the other 5% I don't agree becauuse the statement says that the way you reply is how your relationship affects with that. To me that kind of sounds cruel. But i like that statement thanks.

Gambit,
I think your views hit right on the mark. Its interesting that you make light of the paradoxes that are realized when we presume the existence of a God. Taking this one step further, the Toaist believe that it from these very paradoxes (existence/non-existence duality) that the reality as we know it comes to be.
So essentially THE paradox is the the purest truth there is, while it is purely false at the same time.

babyboi,
in a general sense i think it is fair to assume a god is a god - the subtle or extreme differences between the perceptions of god or godly creatures by each seperate religion is all semantics. to me if there is a god, there would be only one and all the different views and stories of god from each religion would be different interpretations or different variations on a similar story. after a few thousand years of retelling stories things tend to change.
so what god are we talking about - the true god, besides the existence of a god by definition depicts that there is only one so which ever 1000 year old story or whatever interpretation you believe is right then use that as a starting point for these discussions.

I dont know

Its a very confusing topic. The answers that are always given are based on evidence from the bible. Who wrote the bible in the first place? How do we measure the genuinness of the bible? How do we know that the bible is not a scam? How do we do anything? All the answers to this quetion are in the bible. So we go back to the starting point.

you all are trying to answer this question in a logical and rational manner and there is no way that who and what god is could ever be answered thinking that way. and all you must admit that there are things in this world that no human mind can begin to understand and this happens to be one of them.

god!

I do agree with gambit that humanbeings created the god idea b'coz they were unable to explain certain facts, and they found god.
But at the same time i do believe that that was indeed a good idea.Atleast humanbeings fear someone. It gives hopes to people who has lost everything.Although there are people who fight in the name of god,we can bring PEACE in the name of god.
It's better to believe in god even if he doesn't exist. There are times when things go really bad and u need someone with u,and GOD is the only one u can count.

I've always wondered...
Could God(s) be 'created' in a sense, by the human need to believe in a creator or omniescent being?
Or could He/She/It have created us to believe in Him/Her/It?
Just a thought.

ur totaly lost!!!
here's a story ,
in 1722
there was a ship going for fishing, it's there livelyhood that time, they went , they stayed for 8 days in the middle of the ocean , suddenly
a rain storm came , unfortuantly the captian dead
and they lost the map and ofcourse no stars to guide them to the land, but luckly the ship leaded it self to the land alone, to the port !! ppl in the land shocked , but this was the truth. the ship went alone to the land by just 1 day, after the rain storm calmdowen.
this was the story , i think u'll wonder , how?
but this is leading us to the next qustion...
how r the birds eat every day?
how does the animales live in the jungle without control?(they know how to live alone )
do they have a cataloge?
do they took a lessons?
do they study in the schools?
how do they live?
someone , something or some god must control all of this,
it doesnt make sense
how ur all educated ppl , and u cant think of these simple things ???
i dont say u must beleive of ( Allah or jesess ...)
i just say that there must be a god ,whither u like or not , or beleive it or not
coz there is one god who controling every thing

Hmm... most interesting. God could very well be a figment of your imagination.
Or as a gentleman put it (while I was at a store yesterday), "a pigment of your imagination". Hehehe!
