Seeing life as a joke, or serious?
February 21, 2005 - 07:52 AM

Firstly: Love to all my people, not just tig people... No to all o yall!!!
Hey Im Gavan 23 years old, from Amsterdam. may just be my opinion, but I feel like a lot of people take life too serious. I guess its just me but I deny to see life as something Im doing to serve something or someone. It's my interpretation but when I see people around me worry about small issues all I can do is laugh.... All these little insecurities like is there a god, is there not... what happens after all this? Who cares people refuse to accept certain insecurities... I say as soon as you accept the fact that you cant unraffle all world's mysteries and start focussing on positive issues that surround you, world would be a better place.
I want to know how people feel about that... HOLLA!!!
Love Gavan

what is life without liberty? what is liberty without a mind like Gavan's?I'm so in love with Gavan's psyche because i so prctice it everyday...you must realise that for every moment you spend wondering why, you stop living life and start pondering it.Instead of going headlong into every experience and coming out stronger and wiser, you waste all your energy and time wondering why?i just move into it and move out, shake myself off and move on, keeping only the smiles and the reasons for my laughter and not even pausing a minute to think over why i didn't get the job or what exactly made me cry the other day...life is just way too short...So Gavan, can we hook up?

Gaven bro - how can you appreciate life if you do not understand it?
I love Amsterdam - and I think we probably live somewhat similar lifestyles - I am a filmmaker from LA - you ever heard of Burning Man bro - desert party with about 40,000 naked people.
but I would suggest that you read the Ethics by Aristotle -
He sees the goal of life as happiness - and then anylizes what kind of happiness is truest and best.
Heodisnism will not ultimately bring you the greatest happiness.
Xakt79, and Graven - you will find that there are certain experiences that are not worth having, certain things that are not worth trying, certain substances and people that you do not have to try in order to know that you don't want to go there - it is not just about plunging headlong into every potential experience -
I have members of my family that got hooked on Crystal Meth and during that time did many things that they are NOT proud of, and really hurt their prosepcts in life - they are still paying for these mistakes - so a little moderation and a bit of caution is simply wise.
I am a few years older than you - laid alot of pipe in my time - alot, I know how to work it - now I have a serious girlfreind and you know what - if you don't find love - and merely waste your time in meaningless sex, and chasing tail - you done missed it - you missed out on the finer things in life.
There is more to life than puffing the magik dragon and playing shallow games with shallow girls.
There are many deeper levels to both relationships and to the understanding of life - you do need to know, you just don't think you do -
As someone who has only had beans all his life thinks that baked beans are all he will ever need - he just hasn't tried sushi so he doesn't know what he is missing.
That said and aesthetic life living like a monk and "saving" yourself for marraige has the same problem - you cannot understand life if all you do is sit around and think about it, and read books - you have to live life and experience it to have any real understanding - otherwise it is just theory and conjecture and mental masterbation.
I always think it is hilarious when virgins try to tell me that they understand love and I do not- because they are waiting for marriage - gimme a break.

Yes it is nice to be able to laugh and enjoy the good things in life, but at the same time you have to be realistic. Life isn't rainbows and bunny rabbits all the time and there are times where you need to be serious. Self discovering, questioning the world and growth are a part of the necessary change of living.
In order to enjoy life you really do need to understand some aspects of it. Personally I think that the idea of God as a person, a person who created everything doesn't agree with my set of beliefs. I do, however, believe there is a super power or subhuman enegery/force, whatever you'd like to call it. And I also don't fully support the ideas of creation and evolution, moreso bits and pieces of each.
People seek religion for different reasons as a comfort, as a sense of belonging and to understand certain ideologies of the world. If you did some reading you'd find some amazing cultures, and religions, even if you choose not to follow them.

Positive sides?
Everyone has got his point of view regarding positive sides in life.
For me, the meaning of my life itself is something that renders it "positive"; though, my knowledge is limited; I don't know where was I before being born, nor where shall I go after death,...any many things of that stuff...
Yet I had to think questions like: "Why am I here?", because simply, I am evident that "I am here!"
The next question was; "who brought me here?"
And it was not "Who brought the one who brought me here?"
Because the last question is so "sophist" in transforming the "creative power" to a "creature" in an infinite chain.
It's easy; you "feel" yourself, but you're evident that you didn't exist by occasion or chance. Why?
Questions like: What is that kind of occasion that makes birds migrate from ceratin places to other specific places, in specific seasons, without any kind of GPS or navigation astrolabs? What's that kind of occasion that makes the mosquito's embryo sac float on water, in order for the embryo to live, and what kind of "occasion" that makes the "Tournesol" flower always heading towards the sun? Are all of those things occasions? Did they exist by themselves? Just like that?
Others say; there's no scientific material proof of the existence of that "creative power"; well, let them answer that question first: "Could you let us "see" or "smell" or "touch" the magnetic field lines, the electronic waves, or the electrons, or even the earth's gravity?
Their immediate answers will be: We see material evidences that are the direct consequences of all of these phenomena; like objects falling down, oscillograph representations, etc... but they'll never tell you what's the nature of the electromagnetic wave itself, in a "materialistic" process,....the thing is science, -that should be held responsibility of answering the question of whether there is a God or not- is based on uncertainty; and uncertainty is like "believing in something".
That's why I find that my life has a meaning when I believe in The "Creative Power": My life has a meaning.

So the meaning of your life is to understand why? I guess thats the difference between the two of us.. I dont really need to know why..
I think everyone already knows most things in life but will seldom seek inside to look for the truth but is more likely to comform to the opinion of the majority..
ill finsh this post another time.. Gotta go..

hi!
I dont really read up on great phillosifers, although perhaps I should.. I think that you are the only one who ccan make the best choices in your own life, not a religion, not family no one but yourself... But I do believe in looking for happiness..
Hey
Oh by the way Luke I thought your post was very interesting.. Yeah I have smoked weed for a while and it was pretty hard to quit that stuff... I had to say goodbye to the whole lifestyle and friends to quit.. I feel a lot clearer now, but I have never tried or done any harder or equal drugs...
The fact that I have different girls is because I have always been looking for the right kinda girl and as soon as it's not I start looking for a different one.. I'm a friendly guy so I usually stay friends with girls... And often that means that a spark that has lingered can turn into sex and then it's usually over.. Anyway relationships will come when it comes... The mind should be ready to go into a situation before making something work, I guess Im not responsible enough yet and Im not afraid of making mistakes in a search for happiness, coz life is one big learning experience.. So everything I learn I try to transfer to someone who is interested or someone I care about.. What makes a good man? Is it someone who knows the basics of everything? Or is it one who knows everything about few things?.. Once you know the basics/fundaments of a concept/fenomenan you can explain it by logics.. If you can't, like: Is there a god? Don't worry about it, coz these things are part of the insecurities of life.. Thats what I meant by my thread: Taking things serious.. the standard and little things in life are to enjoy, even sometimes sad things...
I'm happy I live..
and
Knowledge is priceless..

I respect what everyone of you guys has said; but the issue is not that simple.
Yes, one should enjoy life as he or her likes to enjoy it, and there's a difference in how each individual is understanding the concept of "enjoying life"; all that is OK.
But what happens around us is not simple; there are people who are capable of saturating their pleasure desires, while others are deprived from very essential needs.
There are people who really don't know how much others are suffering from diseases, wars, famines, and poverty.
There are lots of people who did, and are still, committing the most atrocious acts against their fellow humans; while others just watch....
The thing is, what kind of "positive" meaning in living just for personal pleasure, without any positive or serious participation in eliminating the suffering, pain and hunger that exists arounds us, everywhere?
The world is not perfect, neither do we; though, people through history, fought, revolted, sacrificed, and died for a "perfect world", in the form of words like "freedom", "independence", "justice", and "equality"...and between those who died and those who didn't, there is that common thing: they all had something to sacrifice for. They put pleasure and pain aside, and they sacrificed with money, effort, resources, and even lives, for something theoetically not attainable in our life...but they were "meaningful" and continue to be.
I believe that the "nature" of humans pushes them to seek an "ethical life"; hence, perfect life is there, but we don't see it: I strongly believe that "perfect life" is after I die. I believe that a person like Hitler will not escape from the "divine justice"...
Thinking likewise makes us understand the PURPOSE of our being, and then building consequences on that...

I didnt really want to start a post on religious beliefs.. So I can just say the fact that you believe in a life after death means you have a different perspective on life... I respect that.. it's cool

Gavan,
I totally agree. I think if people would focus on the now and realize that the only thing they can control is their actions, feelings, thoughts and responses than the world would be a lot less stressful. I myself take life seriously.. but i dont focus on the negative and unknown. Cheers.

I am a few years older than you - laid alot of pipe in my time - alot, I know how to work it
Hello again, gramps.
Back to the topic, life is to be taken as a balance. If you take things too seriously then you might end up chronically depressed or suicidal, while if you take things as a laugh you'll never accomplish anything!
Love as in relationships is important, for me it refers to friends and family, and perhaps for some it is the other half of their soul but what I always like to keep in mind is that at the end of the day the person which will be happy or sad is you and you alone, so screw what people say what you should or should not do. What doesn't make you feel the highs and lows in its various forms isn't really worth living.

Here are some interesting quotes on seriousness and life !
It is not so important to be serious as it is to be serious about the important things. The monkey wears an expression of seriousness which would do credit to any college student, but the monkey is serious because he itches.”
Robert M. Hutchins
True, we love life, not because we are used to living,
but because we are used to loving. There is always some madness in love,
but there is also always some reason in madness
--Friedrich Nietzsche
Man's maturity: to have regained the seriousness that he
had as a child at play. --Friedrich Nietzsche
Personally, as far as relationships are concerned , i enjoy them but I am serious about my commitment towards them. There is no half way for me ....its either in or out !!!!
we all experiment in the early stages of life. trying to know things and figure out our likes and dislikes .But as we grow up we begin to realise our priorities and then act according to them. If one is a keen observer of life and things , seriousness automatically comes .
Being serious is not a 'dull ' thing . One should be serious about certain things in life ....otherwise one misses out on lot of good things ! however seriousness doesnt mean putting on a serious face ....NO seriousness means practically ' thinking over' !!!!
It means experiencing things in the real sense instead of superfically !
Cheers!
