Alcoholism: a general view point (2)

Having noted a few causes of alcoholism, it is pertinent to focus attention on the effects of excessive alcoholic drinking.
Nearly all the food we ingest is digested and changed before the human system accepts it for use. But alcohol enters into the blood stream almost immediately after ingestion. It then moves through the liver to the various parts of the body, including the brain. Alcohol supplies calories but no materials or vitamins. There is therefore, a total absence of nutritional value.
Due to excess calories in alcohol, normal nutrition tends to be impaired, especially in the skid -row type alcoholics. The result is deficiencies in protein, vitamins or those minerals that are necessary for body maintenance.
The brain consists of many layers, and alcohol
