World bank, IMF, WTO are the problem!!!

Definitely it's not! The 8 Millennium Development Goals are attainable and possesses many unique characteristics that make an outstanding global-level promise to sweep away extreme poverty internationally by 2015. But there are still many things urgently need to be improved on our way hand-in-hand reaching MDGs to, at least immediately convince those like me-of-yesterday of the undeniable feasibilities to campaign for it.
I used to exclaim "Oh no, not another set of commitments..." more than ten times then neglected it for a long time before I acknowledged how important the MDGs are and before I got more involved in the Millennium Campaign. The gloomy perceptions prevented me from the glorious sunbeam of a better world in a beter tomorrow. But now everything has changed...
I still find myself in a striving struggle against extreme poverty together with my people but now I can see their radiant faces looking up the bright blue sky. I still feel shocked as watching the national news, there are pupils at their last year of primary education could not even read a page of newspaper; but now I can put my anger into action, my knowledge into of good use to help them. I still enjoy hanging out with friends but now I can find within them a source of youth enthusiasm, potential and determination to become my partners proactively contributing to the Millennium Campaign rather than being my chit-chat friends...
How about you? Will you give me a hand and share your stories?

You know Romi, when I once started talking about MDGs with my friends, they just raised their eyes and said, like, oh, that's huge, but don't you think we've got nothing to do with that? How much do young people know about this initiative in your country? How much of them know what UN does generally? In Russia, there's a huge gap between the young and active (who are usually ppl from prestigious schools or prospective families and are taught to be leaders) and the one who don't ever care about what's going on outside their block. I am strongly convinced that we should first of all educate youth on the role of MDGs and youth initiatives in this sphere, and only then hit heads on th ceiling in excitement.

about un, mun and some other pretentious organizations
April 4, 2005 - 07:14 AM
|
|
my high school has 100+ mun members who claim to deeply care about world issues such as allevation of poverty, equal access to education, human rights, prevention of climate change, sustainable development etc. more than 10 other social service clubs (helping the blinds, street children, the elderly...) accompany the mun, creating a huge youthful "potential" for helping the local community as well as the world.
unfortunately, a very small percentage of this crowd aims to really change something in others' lives rather than gaining admission to colleges abroad. yes; anyone can make a difference, but i dont think the efforts of those who truly care will not be enough to attain the MDGs. UN or its related organizations should not be the ones to set the standards for future because UN is not a "helpful and guiding angel" as we like to think of it...
of course, the bitter reality cannot hold us down nor prevent us from taking futher action. we still have a terrible ending to delay and many years to enjoy...

World bank, IMF, WTO are the problem!!!

Money being a man-made tool of commerce and exchange should not be made scarcely available as usury (compound interest) based debt or compound interest bearing loan. The conventional fiat-money, no longer secured by anything but legal sanctions behind it, derives its value from people's faith and perception (beliefs) about money. Concentration of wealth and extremes of poverty is a result of progressive monetarization of economies through centralized monopoly banking system, which is the legacy of colonnial times.
Learning what money is, how it comes into circulation and how it is allocated/distributed, how the monopoly of one-two world currencies are disempowering people everywhere and corrupting all institutions is a must before we can create the structural foundation for better society, community and peaceful abundance for all. More of us are engaged in learning about and solving the money problem ..quicker we can change reality for all life in the planet.
Cheers

Millennium Globalizantion Goals ? :)
April 6, 2005 - 01:39 AM

what seems to be most threatening about the MDGs is that it appears to be another tool of uniformity. I remember reading a splendid review "Impoverishing a continent. IMF and World bank in central Africa" on how much has IMF's adjustment programs contributed to the continents current welfare.
But to limit ourselves to criticizm wouldn't be an answer at all. So what about local ways to fight global problems?

I'm, on the other side, strongly believe that we should first of all educate youth on their local, immediate, issues and problems, than the issues of their region, then country, continent and only after that - the international issues and projects. This way it would be really natural, organic, inspiring (that's they see what can do about the local issue directly and the results would be immediately seen and felt by them and their surrounding). It would be lessons of direct democracy, of democracy of participation, and it's way more important than educating them on some abstract distant issues that can't directly relate to. We shouldn't become one global "virtual" village in the future, but rather a net of very real and small (like city blocks, towns and _real_ villages) communities self-managed by their total population. That's MY idea of democracy, not some kind of corrupt western 'representative' kind of democracy when citizens are entitled to "vote" once in a four or three or whatever number of years just to get some guys they too often even don't konw personaly to define the policies of their macro-regions (countries) without any real feel of responsibility and the need to feedback.

millenium goals
April 6, 2005 - 08:04 AM
|
|
I think the millenium goals are sound in as much as they point out the pertinent issues in the world. But how to achieve them, the order of priority and what they mean to the different a peoples in their socio-political and geographical environment matters.
I would have loved and it would have been wonderful if those goals were achievable for each and every nation or a people. Its a pity to realise that some socio-political and economic contexts can not just allow for the attainment of the given goals in the near future.
Above all, i think, the world needs awareness. An awareness that is deep, precise and clear. awareness of what? what i have in mind is 'the dilemma of being'. The fact that there are ideals, the practical, the practised and reality.
I wish the tyrannies could understand, the oppressors could become human and the oppressed could stand up against oppression. I wish we could feel for others and seek to understand others in their limitations and in their strengths.
but the problem is that not every one can understand for even though we see but we are blinded by egoistic and individualistic urges and drives.
Let us be wary of the new world order and its trade liberalization and its crude capitalist tendencies and its ruthless policies that do not care about the 'little man' in the dirty slum.
Only after all will be in the best of interests at all levels of control and priviledge will millenium goals and all other else be achiavable.

MDGs need global youth involvement at local level
April 8, 2005 - 06:25 AM

MDGs can be seen also for getting results in the neighbourhood. There are problems with the IMF and WTO as they are instituions that have been built on understanding of development paradigm that assumed sustained supply of resources. There is a global recognition now for promoting ecologically sustainable consumption, production patterns as there is a reference to the same in the millennium development goals. We all have a challenge to implement this in our lives. IMF and WTO may not transform thier policies but we can change our behavior patterns by minimizing ecological footprints and maximizing use of renewable and faith based resource for survival and leisure respectively. I have been focussing on the communication for global adoption of faith based instruments and shun the leisure use pattern suggested by entertainment industry and breweries through their campaigns utilizing actors and singers. It is important to ensure that we transform our leisure use pattern by getting more faith based instruments such as prayer 5 times a day. We can suggest this to all for better personal and ecological health. With this we would be able to generate more comapssionate responses and abhorence for prohibited activities .

Usurious finance system is the problem
April 8, 2005 - 06:36 AM

World Bank can be run following the commands of God without charging compound interest and then charging only the administrative charges. There are movements for this and these movements are getting support from the faith based groups. Debt servicing drains lots of resources that can be used for social development in the recipient countries

It's exactly the same at my school, although our MUN chapter is smaller. I'm Vice President of Research, and I'm also in charge of attracting new members.. I find it really difficult to do this without mentioning the college admissions boost. But I figure that if I can get them to join and learn about these issues through conferences, perhaps a passion for international issues will be sparked. I completely agree with educating our peers about global issues-- I started a Global Awareness Council at my school, which works with school teachers and other clubs (MUN, Amnesty, etc.) in order to promote teen awareness and involvement. I live in the U.S. and our humanities curriculum is extremely domestically-oriented. We didn't learn anything about current international issues this year in AP Government.

Its human to be wrong. Its also human to find someone/something to blame for the wrong. Denial is human. But, it becomes addictive.

Institutions
June 25, 2005 - 11:20 AM

One trend I notice on lots of global boards at the moment is the decreasing belief and trust in large domestic institutions, and the increasingly common disbelief that, in their ancient forms, they will ever be capable of achieving even a portion of their lofty goals.
So its good that these institutions do (sometimes) attempt to open their doors, which is OK as long as you know where the doors are located, and TIG can ensure that a group's questions are answered and their ideas considered (in four languages at a time), using TIG's collaboration tools.
I think TIG have got a real good opportunity to lower a few institutional walls here.
Here's one door. http://www.worldbank.org/oed/ongoing_evaluations.html
Here's another.

Anyone got another?

Government Educates the youth right now while I'm writing this reply

Sofia, you propose to educate the youth about MDGs? I agree, that's nice idea, but how? I don't say that it's impossible, I simply want to know how you see it.
You are right saying that there're those who care and those who don't. Think about the reasons of such behaviour. We care, we have home, computer or at least access to the internet, we know English and we Can think about making the World better and MDGs. What about those who don't care? Most of them are homeless or have problem parents, they cannot think about a better world, their priority is to get bread. How do you think to educate these people who do not believe in bright life, good government and hardly can read and write.
Romi, continuing the message to Sofia, I'd like to ask not for the stories, but for the way out as you see it. There's a multiple challenge, so where to start from?
CARPE DIEM!
