Are you young and want to take action on the MDG's? This could be your chance!
May 5, 2006 - 12:20 PM

hey,

I'm Dinesha, international communications coordinator for The Oaktree Foundation www.theoaktree.org

The Oaktree Foundation is an entirely youth run international aid and development organisation with a mission to 'empower developing communities thorugh education in a way that is sustainable'. Our vision is of a generation of young people learning though partnership and working together to create a better world.

One of Oaktree's key objectives is advocacy, helping youth to teach themselves and each other about the MDG's and generate a movement of young people who are socially aware and willing to take action to make positive change. Because Oaktree is entirely youth run you as a young person are able to take on meaningful responsibilities that would usually be taken by an older person in another organisation.

It is my firm belief that if we as a generation of youth start now, learning from and understanding each other, working together instead of against each other, we really do have the chance to significantly change our world for the better.

My job is to grow branches of Oaktree in cities around the world and current cities of focus are Boston USA, Toronto CAN, London UK, Durban SA and Johannusburg SA. If you're interested in helping in any way to get Oaktree developed in your region and make ours the generation that really makes a difference in our world, please contact me at dinesha@theoaktree.org. If you are really passionate about Oaktree's cause and are not in one of these regions give me an email anyway and i'll see what we can do.

Cheers!

Dinesha

The youth and children like all past and present organizations never had one good leader all around the world. One to assemble them all, but now we have instant internet WW.
We are in the process of doing so. Sites like this will connect all the same age peoples from around the world in order to re-draw how we are to live. From those voided of artistry to the too liberal, in both their good and evil ways.
Understand the Geography man should be located in in the future first then work your way backwards should be the process of those who care tasks of all ages.
Without a destiny we have no where to thrive for.
All ages fear the soon arrival of the new us. Fear of our extremes.

Gerald

starting with ourselves
May 7, 2006 - 07:24 AM

I think it's important that we value the individuals and small groups who commit to living up to the MDG's. I think that we need to begin by committing to the MDG's by ourselves ("be the change that you want to see in the world"wink.

From what I can tell, that is what pompelmone does, so kudos to everyone who is working in the "small-scale" in addition to being big-thinkers smile

People said that the youths would be change our world. It's truth but the fact that many of them don't think so.WHY?
Because of our experiences. we can make many good decisions.Of course,we should have many specific policies. Why don't we take part in many conferences of gorvement more?.

I am from Colombia and in this country there is a lot of poverty as in many other countries around the world. It is important fot the MDG's that youth get involved and work for them, but there seems to be a problem, people sometimes don't want to get involved, it is difficult to motivate them, they think the Goals are just dreams, or, just as they are getting somewhere, they crash against the governments walls, who may be interested in achieving th goals but who could lose a lot if they do. How could a person make them know we cannot let people die because of money (it maybe a lot of money, but that does not justify them). And who gave them the right to decide that I, or you, or anybody should not have education and a proper home and proper health services and the rest deserve a good life status? We are all equal, we think, we feel, we need and we want what others already have ando don't want to share. I am sure that all people don't want gigantic amounts of money, they want the opportunity to work and live with a minimum of services provided by the State (health, food, education, work opportunities) Who decide that the people on the top deserve the privileges that they have and that the rest deserve poverty? wink

I think that the youth of the world can't expect to be given the opportunity to be leaders and to make radical difference on a plate. I think that it is up to us to make enough noise to be heard and brave enough to use the amazing power that living in our generation has given us.

I think the saddest thing is when young people, in typical teenage style, are too worried about what their friends think or that itis too much effort or that we can't really make a difference. These people are the ones holding us back, because we can make a difference but if governments think that people aren't going to get really vocal or make a big deal out of the MDG's and the promises our governments made then we really can't expect much to happen.

Peace.
Hilary

Are we not missing the point completely??
September 14, 2006 - 08:50 AM

Hi. I have taken the patience to read through all the contributions here and have come to the point that, except for some few comentators, most people missed the point completely.
The initial question was that the MDGs have not focused particular attention to youth development, if I understood him correctly.
The point is, MDGs are compact goals Set by some UN member nations at a conference which are considered as the minimum requirements for countries to be considered to have developed and was adopted by the UN general assembly. These goals take youth into cognisance in large terms, only that it has not been indicated as some of us wuld want it done.
Take the goal number one for instance, to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, according to UN statistics, youth and children are recorded as the highest in the population of those who are poor and hungry and who die from poverty and hunger related issues. So, if extreme hunger and poverty are eradicated, youth would be the better for it. Same goes for goal number two. The number of persons who enroll for Universal basic education are youth and children, for goal number 5, marternal mortality, most women who die due to child birth or other related ailments are within the youth bracket. Same also goes for HIV/AIDS and malaria (goal 6), the highest number of victims also is youth and children.
Like I have said, youth issues are enveloped in the MDGs, but if we are asking for specific programmes designed for youth from the UN or other agencies, I dont thing there is anything wrong with that. Afterall, the more programmes we have that specifically deal with youth, the better for us.
Lets keep up the struggle, we are doing the right thing!!!

Forgive me for both my ignorance and awkwardness, this is my first post, but I have been reading the boards here for a couple of days and just wanted to say that I really liked what moleepaiko wrote above.

The MDG's are huge and they indirectly affect the lives of so many young people. So more power to the youth who are working to bring the MDG's about!
