Most of the technocrats are saying the milleniun development goals shall reduce poverty by 2015.
How realist is that going to be attained?
Can the forum shade more light on who should look after the 'jiggies'?

i do not think poverty goals will be achieved.
Why?
because western rich countrey´s do not keep their promisses.
In the 70`s the rich countrey promissed to give a half present of there income to poor countrey+s after all these years they still do not do it.
But maybe when the african leaders stand up and demand the promisses, trying to get peace in the countrey+s and standing up for their people rights, maybe then it cna be achieved

Thanks for your response but i would like to add a few words on how development could possibly be blogged as 'rancontour' of the world.
Currently Africa is too week to stand up and challenge the G8 countries as their national or domestic budgets are financied by them.At the same time time our leadership is theoretical in terms in implementing revolutionary ideas.
Even brain wash has contributed so much that we are have lost nerves to think indegenous in terms ofpolicy formulations.
Corruption, nepotism and ethinic divisions are still clingingin on our back.
But now what is the way forward?

As an American, I know that our country has repeatedly failed to deliver on its promises in regards to its donations towards global relief, and personally I find it both disheartening and embarassing. But I can also tell you that here, before we can address the MDPs, Americans first did to become more aware of the project and its importance. Sadly, though most Americans are aware of world poverty and sympathize, there is a dissettling apathy throughout America when it comes to global action. I honestly wish I could offer a solution to this. As far as I can predict, the US government won't follow through on its word until the American people demonstrate a higher level of concern for the rest of the world.

In kenya, the city council of Nairobi tried to remove the street kids and put them into homes. They only had short term solution to a problem that was decades old. Now all the street children are back to the streets and they are more frustrated.

Now we are pointing fingers on leaderships through out the world on the failures of reducing poverty. But critically speaking,we the people have given our leaders alot of time to play on our minds.
Lets look at the childsoldier issue, even the the UN and the United States are aware of the autrocities but since in those respective countries they are taking away the resources in the instance of the Congo DR and the Dafour crisis in Sudan. The local community have to acquire substancial survival knowledge for the to fight and restore sanity in the managing of the resources.
Lets look at the never ending cases in Zambia of trying to prosecute the former President over alleged plunder of national resources(over $500 000) are involved and the firing of the minister of education in Nigeria over over inflating of national budgets,in these two cases Judges that trying them get less than $200 monthly and do you think these cases shall fall in the favour of the people.
The USA also should be blamed for some of the wars in Africa and the UN,actually it is an open secret that arms manufactured in the westerm world find themselves in the hands of the children as soldiers fighting against their gvts.
The milleniun development goals can ONLY be attained if serious measure without selfish interests of acquiring wealth are checked out.
Take care all

Britains hosting of the G8 and EU Presidency.

The MDG's probably could be achieved by 2015 but like anything within the UN framework it's dependent upon the will of the countries involved and more often then not the rich and industrialized nations and this is often lacking.
As far as i'm aware since the millennium very little progress has been made on the MDG's i think i remember some body saying that at current levels of investment it could take over a hundred years to implement them but don't hold me to that.
This year is quite important for MDG's, firstly the UN is reviewing the MDGs this year probably with a conclusion of we've basically done nothing new i presume.
However, this year Britain becomes host to the G8 meeting of industrialized nations and takes the EU presidency. This is important because Tony Blair and Gordon Brown have put MDG's and Aid high on the agenda. At Davos Gordon Brown announced that the G7 should abolish 100% of debt to the poorest nations (i think 25 nations) later all but the US agreed to this (surprise, surprise) they replied saying something like "what is the right respinse for others is not necessarily the right course for America". See below address, it is correct even if is doesn't have www..
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4238045.stm
Hopefully, things will continue likewise but i think what i'm trying to say is hopefully some momentum will build this year and for once maybe the British government is trying to do something right - although i won't hold my breath.
Finally, that in some cases aid/help isn't used in the best ways and although this doesn't excuse the west of how little it does but with any aid there has to be safeguards that the money isn't going to get lost in corruption or misused e.g. Malawi where the Danes stopped investing aid.

Thanks for your time,
Dan

ejmgosselin - I think your pretty much right - although I wouldn't dicount the amount that Americans give privately.
And private conations are basically subsidized by the government because you can write them off your taxes.
But really there is no single solution to this problem - different areas of the world require different solutions.
The middle-east has alot of poverty - but they are also sitting on an enormous wealth of natural rescources - the problem is that the Oil revenues are horded by a few elite families when the Oil industry should be federalized in State control - and the revenues should be invested in other industries - this redistrobution solve alot of their problems.
In Southeast Asia and places like Afghanistan the question is not that simple - the Afghanis have little in the way of natural rescources or education - so it is a more difficult problem.
The collapse of Communism has alot to do with improved standards of living in Eastern Europe -
Africa and South America have their own issues -
Sometimes education is the problem, some times the governments are the problem - it depends on where you are.
But even affluent nations like America and Western Europe have poverty (although everything is relative).
This is an age old question - there are no societies that have been able to completely dispell poverty.
And those that try through things like Communism end of having the effect of dragging the whole society into poverty - which happened in Russia, Eastern Europe etc.
It is a difficult question - I wish I had more answers.

Its human nature to advocate for the elimination of something from the community that is resident in their very own homestead.

I think MDGs will be achieved depending on the country that you are in but not as soon as 2015. This is an unrealistic estimate.

Dear friends,
For the past three weeks we have seen substantial progress from the G8 countries in the quest to write off 100% debts to the developing countries. But I think reducing poverty by the year 2015 is unrealistic and a white elephant.
Also the isssue of misapropriating of public resources amongst the leadership of the developed nations is a worrying factor towards the MDGs.
All in all we can reduce poverty only if our communities that we reside on have enough education for their survival.
Now can anyone tell the forum on how the current street kids would be classed in since their enviroment seems to be normal to most of them;smooking genkem, marijuana.Trying to make a living from pick pocketing.
Take care all

The truth is we have to face the reality. The proverty policy do not showing much beneficts to the third country .
North Korea is currently serious facing financial crisis, the people are starved to death ,hunger, the children are having physical and mentally problem ,yet the government still able to conduct their nuclear development.where has all the international financial asistance gone?
Just look at the current global .
The rich ones are gaining pounds of profits,
what about the poor ones?they are living in the state of hell....lead to misery ,pain...
The prostitutes are at the growing state,is this one of the consequences due to poverty ? you should judge it yourselve.

I beleive that those are simply targets to aid us in the direction we should take. Its like aiming for the sun, maybe we will reach the moon.
The target is quite unrealistic and anyone would be very thankful if its achieved, but, its there to give us the challenge.
Mind you, we are also part and parcel of the process to achieve this goal, so, lets work together.
