[Poll] Good Development Tools -

Hey, TIG members! I woulld like to know your thoughts about the effect of video games on youth. To start us off, I think that video games tend to cause negative effects on youth (such as playing violent video games (GTA San Andreas or Doom 3 for example) instigates aggression and violent behaviour). Please post your thoughts.

I think violent video games are too easily accessible. I was able to play HALO (an M-rated game) in Futureshop and when an employee walked by, he looked and didn't at all object. Also, it is just too easy to download a demo for an M-rated game (like Diablo). I think there should be a maximum game rating for which the company/store may do this. It is exposing minors to violence.

By the way, if you do not know, M-rated games mean that you should be at least 17-yrs old to play it.

I understand why everyone hates video games. Violence and matur themes are being shown to kids who get their hands on them somehow. However, a big thing that plays into whether or not a video game causes negative effects depends on parental discipline and education. Parents nowadays don't have control over their children because everyone is afraid of child abuse and all of that nonsense. I was never one to be abused by my parents, they've loved me forever but I was always terrified of doing wrong things because my parents showed me they were in control. Because most kids don't have involved parents, thats where the negative consequences of video games happen. Parents need to be more aware of what their children are doing and need to educate them on whats real and fake. It's just like hollywood movies. We love to watch them, but there is more blame on games than movies.

I feel that video games can have a negative effect on children. I like the fact that games are rated buti am not sure how effective it is. Many parents do not know what each rating stands for or they do not realize that the games are rated. Beacuse of this I feel that their should be charts showing parents what each rating is and what the recommined age group is for that rating is. I belevie that this will cut back on the number of children playing video games that are not apporpritate for there age gruops and help inform parents so they know what is appropriate to buy for their children.

Video games are probablly good components for children in the fact that they create good mechanical growth , eye to hand coordination , and they help increases motor skills. Their even used as professional development tools. The flight simulator is certainly one of the most widely used video components in industry - which is used for aerial training.
As in all media , the content of such media is rated and should be considered by adults before buying the software.
I remember seeing 6 and 7 year kids with their parents at my first viewing of Private Ryann. It's a shame that some parents don't show or demonstrate any responsibility.
Parents should look for Nitendo products while shopping for video games for young children.
As in anything else - You can find good and bad influencies in anything. If your kid responds in a negative manner after playing perticular video games then you should ban that game from their library until they get a little older or they begin acting more mature. If your kid is tempered to be violent in nature then you should certainly moderate their behavior after their video sessions. It may help them alleviate stress from school or peer pressure. It also could have an alternate effect.
Another good idea is to become active with your children and play their video games with them and monitor their behavior during game play. That way you know what kind of content is in the games they own and then you can make more responsible parental decisions when purchasing future products.

I am an avid video game player. I have been playing video games since i was about 7 years old. granted video games didn't have to much objective content years ago. I still had to be able to tell the difference between what was real and fake. I do agree that stores should sell based on the ratings and the age of the customer, but if the parents want there childern to play the games they can still buy them. It is really up to the parents to choose what the kids play nowadaysand to explain to their kids what is real and fake. Just like Movies, graphic games will always be made and there really isn't much anyone can do.

I can see why some people would be against violent video games, but as long as companies are going to profit off them, these games will always be around. The only thing that can be done is to strictly enforce the rating system on games and not let underage kids buy M rated games. Also, access to downloads of M rated games should have some sort of age check (maybe by credit card confirmation).

As for the affect these games have on kids, I believe that it is greatest at earlier ages when these kids have not yet fully grasped the concepts of what’s truly real. Teenagers have no excuse as they should be well aware of differentiating between what you can do in the real world, and those actions that are reserved for the gaming reality.

I don't seem to think video games effect youth at all. I think some people just blame video games for violence in real life. People like to use them as an escape goat. If you are five years old and your parents lets you play GTA san andreas and other violent games then its there fault. The parents should know what to let there kids play and what not to play.
