Wildlife Rehabilitation
September 11, 2002 - 08:12 AM

Have you ever watched Animal Planet? Seen the people rescuing wildlife? Well None of those organizations are funded by the government, local or otherwise. I don't know how it is outside the U.S., but here its awful. The worst thing is people DON'T EVEN KNOW. We are the ones who develop, taking over what was once animal habitat. We are the ones who run over racoons, turtles, opossums...the list goes on. So why don't people care? Our local government is donating MILLIONS to the zoo! There they have exotic animals, far from there native habitat and exhibited in conditions unlike those in the wild. But when, for example, a wildlife rehabilitation center called Racoon Rescue asks for some kind of financial support, the city refuses. These people have devoted there lives to these animals! Because she had no funding, Kathy Mosley is going out of business. I get the feeling people just think its cute, or some curiosity. They just don't get the fact that without our assistance, these animals would surely die. How do they get injured or orphaned animals in the first place? Human garbage, hunting, cars, or just cruel people, but not natural predators. Its a common misconception that by helping them out, we are distubing the natural balance.NO! Saving these animals is a small effort towards RESTORING the balance. What i am interested to know is - how is this problem handled in your community, What do you think about the way these organizations are treated, etc.

Awareness Grows Slowly
September 12, 2002 - 07:55 AM

People often ignore or become angry over "pests" that are indigenous life that we are displacing. Our family often watches Animal Planet. Perhaps the continued raising of awareness will help our communities live better with the "natives".

Cant say I get Animal Planet over here.

On a lighter note, the whole environmental scene has taken a real-nose-dive over here since the Crocodile Man (Steve Irwin) launched his movie. Aussies hate him (as do I) so anything remotely animalistic seems so, erkish.

big grin

Zoos are not animal gaols (jails). They are scientific research centres which care for many species of animals. Yes, they do keep animals caged up and yes, it does impact severly upon their lifestyle and wellbeing ... HOWEVER, it is vital for those species populations AT LARGE that scientists have access to them. A Zoo enables scientists to stufy the nature of animals, their biology, their reactions to certain conditions etc ...

Only by knowing these things, can we effectively implement mitigation strategies to prevent further damage. Zoo's are at the centre of conservation, and sometimes, this rubs off onto their visitors. Dont give them such a hard time .... they do a lot more than you think.

As for the Racoon Rescue project, it is debatable how effective rehabilitation centres actually are. The survival rate is often very low, even once released into the wild. Im not saying that this is a good reason to cease funding however, in a world driven by economics, everything comes down to the dollar.

Zoos provide a much more efficent and effective way for promoting conservation. Perhaps you could ring your nearest zoo and ask the education officer to explain what conservation projects they are currently running ... you will be suprised.

I LOVE Animal Planet as well. The lack of support for these small organizations does bother me. I do work as a volunteer at a wildlife rehabilitation center, and it so easy to see the difficulty involving the finances.
I am going to have to disagree with the comment before about the low rates of success and release, I don't know where they saw that evidence, but I think everyone would be amazed at the high rates of success and abilities to release animals back into natural habitat.

I do also think that the zoos are an amazing place. While I think that some of the habitats are restricting sometimes and do not provide all that is necessary for proper habitats, they do an amazing job at raising global awareness. They are the homes to mostly exotic species, yes, but that will do nothing but help those animal come into the light of focus.

I think that it is great that both types exist buit the government really does need to extend a hand to both, rather than just the national programs and zoos.
