How to end the AIDS epidemic
January 18, 2005 - 03:08 AM

Currently, there is no cure for AIDS. There are many drugs, however, that help control it and improve the quality of life for those who are HIV-positive. These drugs are readily available in Western countries - for example, many HIV-positive people live comparatively normal lives in the United States.

These drugs must be made available to people living in the poorest countries. AIDS is not just a health issue, it affects economic development, education, and even security. A recent gathering of economists rated it the #1 priority for foreign aid (the Copenhagen Consensus). But it doesn't seem like we can rely on drug companies and individual nations to fully fund the fight against AIDS.

President Lula of Brazil has suggested a 'global tax' to fund the fight against AIDS. This is probably never going to happen. But what about a voluntary tax? A 'value-added' tax that is added onto everyday expenses? Let's say, for example, that Amazon.com committed to taking 1 cent from every transaction that takes place on its website and then giving that to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. Think of the possibilities, every time someone buys a song from Apple's ITunes store, everytime someone buys an airline ticket, a tiny portion of the sale goes to this AIDS fund. The beauty is that because so much business happens on the internet, this can be done very cheaply and efficiently. People won't object, because the 'global tax' will be such a small amount - (who cares if your airline ticket costs an extra 5 cents?).

Anyway, this is a brief description of my idea. If anyone wants to talk about this more with me please email me. Thanks.

AIDS is a problem underestimated by the global community. For instance, more than 100,000 people died in Africa due to AIDS in the week after Tsunami occurred, but have we seen any significant news coverage on that?
Your point is certainly valid, Dane. My concern about collaborating with corporations to raise money to fund AIDS is the fact that many tend to spend most of that money to advertise the program itself instead of sending it fully to the research/aid team. For your idea to work, we'd need to prevent that.

February 11, 2005 - 08:28 AM

HI;
Iknow you will be suprise of seing thhis type of reply or a respond to your beautiful view on HIV and AIDS;but wont you think of the basis at which the scorge has come to being,and probably if not a myth the cousative factor that push the poor people more espscially women to contract the disease. although iam an african and i know what it is meant by living in poverty ,i mean abject poverty.
FREIND, i know you will be suprise when i personally said the people you are clamouring that,to help can not listen to such yearnings,why? it is because they are the propriators of the drugs companies and wants to super colonize the third class even in their mids.
