Modern Slang
January 6, 2005 - 08:09 AM

Many times I hear people say "thats so gay"....or "she's/he's retarded""...or other language that is to offensive to put on here.

"Thats So Gay":
What does that mean exactly?....I asked a person one time what exactly he ment by that and he said...."I don't know dude it means like...stupid or uncool" Why would people decide that the word "gay" means stupid or uncool when clearly the definition is happy or homosexual.

"She's/He's Retarded":
Everytime I hear people mention this I get so choked up. Retarded was used when they did not have a more socially acceptable word for Mentally Disabled persons. Why would you even use that word now to describe someone who isnt or IS?.

Can anyone defend "modern slang"? I would like a good reason as to why people feel the need to use language like this.

I agree 100%.
As an early childhood development specialist, I have observed children using these two terms to insult one another without being aware (or at least FULLY aware) of what the terms mean. This language has become pervasive in our society.
Other common terms that offend me are "jailbait" (used by men, to refer to young girls).
"Habib", as in, 'Habib store'. This term is commonly used around here to refer to 24-hour-convenience stores, presumably because the owners/ employees are often of middle-eastern descent. Many people use the term "habib store" thoughtlessly now, without thinking about how it evolved.
"Gypped". As in, ripped off. As in, perpetuating the myth that gypsies and romanians are thieves.
The "N" word (for obvious reasons).
"White Trash", because it perpetuates class stereotypes.
The phrase "That's mighty white of you." This is a common saying in the south, meaning, "That's nice of you" or "Thanks". Even people who consider themselves liberal and would never dream of using the "N" word still sometimes use this phrase, not realizing that by doing so they are perpetuating racial stereotypes.
"Like a girl". As in one guy telling another, "You hit (kick, run, throw, whatever) like a girl." As in, females are weak, inferior, incompetent and inept, and to be compared to one is a crushing blow to the male ego.
There are other phrases and terms that bother me... I could go on and on, actually.

Anyway, my husband calls me the P.C. Police, because I insist that those around me use politically correct language in my presence, and I WILL NOT HESITATE to call someone out when I hear them using terms that perpetuate racist/sexist/classist/ageist stereotypes or terms that are derogatory toward the handicapped.

i agree...it like really sucks, alot of people i know also use the word 'unsocial' in very irrelevant topics, or 'gay' when i asked them why they cant just use slang which makes sense they told me not to take everything so seriously, that they dont have anything against gays or so, that its just a habit!!!!!!!

I know and the same people that are using these terms are the ones that get offended when someone make jokes about their background, or about them in general.
Its wrong how slang has become so offensie and cruel. My fiancee says the same thing and always makes sure that he doesnt use slang like that. Many of my family and friends are careful about jokes tehy make because they dont wanna offend me. But its not jsut offending me....its offending many people in society and its hard for people to understand that.
Thye just think your being to "uptight"

but its really hard to actually do something against it - i mean they just roll their eyes, and call me pope or something...i mean were all just kids, 14, so nobody takes me seriously, and most people talk without using their brains, they dont take thmeselves seriously when they say stuff like that. In chemistry that day we were looking at two different experiments, and this girl was like 'oh mi god that is like so sexy!" i was like "what you mean??" and shes like "nothing, i just think its cool" geez..
