Why is trade not a sexy issue?
January 4, 2005 - 08:51 AM

The international monetary system pervades perhaps every aspect of our lives. So why is it that we don’t talk about it that much?

I think that this generation of young people is the most informed in history. We are also the ones with the most choices as to what issues we become informed about and act upon, as more than any other generation we are impacted upon by globalisation and the diverse range of situations and issues that this brings with it.

Systems of global trade are interconnected with a huge number of issues such as debt in developing countries, patents on drugs to combat HIV, pollution and child labour… the list goes on.

Looking through the TIG site it seems that not many people start threads or respond on topics related to international markets and trade. Why do you think this is?

I am in the process of writing an article for a magazine about young peoples’ views on trade. The first questions that come to mind is, is it an issue that young people think is important? And, is it a subject that young people are actively involved in?

I wonder if the lack of discussion on the dominant neo-liberal international economic system is because it is so big and intangible. Or perhaps we just don’t really understand it because information is so inaccessible and exclusionary.

I would be keen to hear what you all think… Do you agree or disagree with my calls?

Trade issue

I would agree with you about on the disccussion of trade. Perhaps one needs to talk about globalization with an argument that fits in with everything that the person is facing in ones life. One would need to understand and teach how trade acts locally to the community. Its kind of like finding an equation that fits everything for everything that is universal. We need a statement or argument that would make people become aware of trade and how this effects people every single day.

Yeah, I know what you mean. We need to be able to connect the dots and to be able to see how our actions affect others.
A good quote I came across the other day on this was:
“It is central to the successful operation of the culture of capitalism that the consumer be segregated or masked from the consequences of his or her lifestyle on the laborer, on the environment, and on the way of life of those whose degradation makes his or her life possible”
