2005 is hopefully the years that we can make poverty history. Is TIG going to be supporting this most worthwile and fantastic movement by displaying the white band??

The White Band is - a white band

It is the symbol being used for the Make Poverty History campaign which is happening this year.
Calling upon the G8 (the 8 most powerful countries in the world) to erase poverty from our world.
Every 3 seconds someone dies for no good reason - wearing a white band is saying to the world leaders
"this is unaceptable, we want this to stop"

First of i'm wearing it. I've written to Tony Blair and will continue to do so. In terms of bigger events i'm still working on it - the People & Planet group at my uni isn't back after the hols yet but when we come up with some ideas i'll let you know.
I know that TIG is global - but it is poverty is a global thing. There's something on the website about a band for websites
Just on the Europe board - or the poverty one. Just to show the TIG supports the idea.

Hey there Daniel,
Yes, I do think this year has the potential to be a turning point in the fight against global poverty. At least we will hopefully head in the right direction. I think the recent outpouring of public goodwill and global solidarity expressed for victims of the Tsunami disaster proves once again that the public worldwide is supportive of increasing global aid and reducing the burden of debt on developing nations.
The Millennium Development Goals [http://www.millenniumcampaign.org] and the efforts to 'make poverty history' will be a major focus of TakingITGlobal's work in 2005. I hope the community gets behind these important goals. I personally think that "Make Poverty History" is a really good and meaningful slogan - and I think it would be great if we could display the White Armband on the TIG site. Whether or not that will happen (because it's only realy at the moment a UK campaign and TIG is global in nature) I'm not sure. Certainly, our Monthly Theme in April and May will focus on the MDGs and we are working with the UN to create a printed MDG kit that will be available for members around then as well.
What are you doing to support the White Band Campaign? Do you or other TIG members have creative ideas of things we could all do as a community to support the effort?

I support a already accepted way of such communicaton:
Remeber red band you can pin on your chest when its an AIDS day?
Why not making WHITE version of it - as if "i stand for anti-poverty efforts"
And BLUE = I support Europe and Integration of people.
And VIOLET = I support Sexual freedom
And BLACK = I support efforts against death sentence and i support all victims of wrongdoings ..
And GREEN = I support efforts for clean environment
Do you see this suggestion as reasonable?

I think things like this are a good idea
i wear the red ribbon on AIDS day and whenever we're doing a awareness raising event.
There's also a Green Ribbon for the Go Green Campagin - which is calling for British universities to switch to green electricity.
It's not really for me to think of it as 'reasonable' - it's what happens. By wearing an outward symbol it clearly states your position on this.
If every person in the UK was wearing one of these bands saying Make Poverty History it sends out a clear message that we feel strongly about it.
At the moment the world is showing it's capacity to show emotion by the wonderful responce to the terrible disaster that has happened in Asia - when you hear the figures of how much money people are giving out of their own pockets it restores your faith in humanity.
That same compasion can reach out to the people who die each day. Because the number of people who die due to extream poverty makes the number lost in the tsunami seem tiny.
Visit the weblink at the start of this message - view the videos of how some people have to live and then write to your leaders - tell them how you feel and wear the white band to prove it
