Just a quick note to remind people in Europe and North America... the best thing that you can do at this point is to donate money to charitable relief funds. Shipping goods halfway around the world usually costs more than buying them locally in the region, takes longer to get there, and has a greater chance of resulting in culturally inappropriate donations.

In Canada, CIDA's Web site recommends donating through the Canadian Red Cross (which then transfers the funds to the Intl Red Cross and Red Crescent societies). It also lists other agencies at http://www.acdi-cida.gc.ca/cida_ind.nsf/vall/B62A278253C88F3A852564D8004BBA38?OpenDocument

Hi Marta,

The items mentioned were really immediate needs. But as the weeks roll by that list of needs will change (e.g. focusing more on construction tools, machinery and materials as well as livelihood items like nets, boats, etc). Money allows the relief/reconstruction teams on the ground to meet the needs as they change.

My only recommendation if you're sending $ from North America or Europe is to look for organizations that say "100% of your donation goes to the Tsunami relief efforts." These are usually large organizations whose overhead operating costs are covered by major grants or government funds. Many of these have national branches that are also able to give you tax receipts (if that's important to you).

In the US, an organization called CharityWatch monitors the budgets of major charities and provides ratings based on their efficiency of aid. You can check out their suggestions on http://www.charitywatch.org/hottopics/tsunami_asia.html . http://www.charitynavigator.org/ also provides more details... not sure if a similar service exists for Europe, though.
